Favorite thing: Rundale Palace is the 18th-century architectural highlight of provincial Latvia. The Palace is located just 12km (7mi) west of Bauska. It was designed and built in the 18th century by a baroque genius from Italy, Bartolomeo Rastrelli, who created many of St Petersburg's finest buildings.
Rundale Palace is open every day from May to October from 10 AM to 6 PM; from November to April from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Admission fee: adults 1,50Ls; students 1,00Ls.
Favorite thing: The principal attraction of Bauska is its castle, built between 1443 and 1456 as a stronghold for the Livonian knights. The castle was destroyed in battle several times during the 16th and 17th century. The restoration work didn't start until 1976. The castle museum now displays various objects found when archaeological excavations were made during the restoration, as well as a small collection of 16th and 17th-century art. Ancient music festivals are hosted in the castle.
