Park was established by owner of a new castle Zievers. It is said, that in 19th century it was one of the most beautiful parks in Latvia. Park was founded in 1832, and as the name tells, is located just near medieval and new Cesis castles.
Park is full of small sculptures, also stairs from castle area to the pond.
Place of worship is known here already from 14th century. At that time it was an outskirts of city, despite that castle was just not so far away.
This Orthodox church was built in 1842 using some fragments of old former church. Garden of the church is a place where Sievers family is buried.
Brewery in Cesis is known already from the end of 16th century. Building, that could be seen nowadays, was built in the second half of 19th century by landowner Earl Emanuel Zivers. In 20th century it was not only producing beer, but also mineral water or juices.
Nowadays Cesu brewery is also known around, in Latvia, but the brewing takes place in new building. As I tried sometimes before, Cesu beer is quite good one.
Unity square and unity monument stands just not so far from Cesis castle. Square was formed in the beginning of 20th century, later in 1925 the monument was added to commemorate these, who died for freedom.
In Soviet times monument was replaced by Lenin statue, and only again in Latvian independence times it was returned and names as Unity monument.
This church is one of the oldest in Latvia and one of the landmarks of the city. It was built at the beginning of 13th century a religious spot of Germans in Latvia, also it was almost as center of Cristian religion in Latvia, when Livonian Order occupied these lands.
Church houses burial places of masters of Livonian Order. Church for long time was not so high as now, the tower was built in 1853.
It is nice object in Cesis, but I should tell, as it is important place, it needs more reconstruction.
Medieval castle presents long history of Cesis town. It was built 13th century, but present look was kept from 16th century. As I have heard, it was one of the strongest castles in Baltic States.
Cesis medieval castle was a residence of Livonian Order masters from 1239 to 1561, so was very important place in area of Latvia. After Northern War (1703) it was damaged and useless, castle burned and ruins stood here till these days.
Even from ruins it is possible to see how powerful it was, with strong walls and towers, still visible trench.
The structure was built in the middle of 18th century, some parts of old medieval castle were used, as some walls and also tower.
in first half of 19th century it was also a bit changed, gained the view of baroque building. The building was a property of Sievers family, they lived till here till First World War. Latvians soldiers used this castle till Second World War, later it became dwelling house and from 1949 it is already as a museum.
The most interesting thing is to go up to tower to see panorama of Cesis. Ticket to the castle costs 2 lats (about 2,40 euros).
People visiting Cesis have to see the medieval castle. Entrance fee is 3 lats and it's worth the money. Also the nice park around the castle is a must, have a walk and enjoy the beautiful sight on the castle above on the hill.
St. John church locates in old town square. It is a largest old basilica church in Latvia. Temple is built in gothic style in 1281—1284 of limestone. St. John church was a major temple of Livonian Order. Its massive tower towers over the square. Altar painting was painted by estonian painter Johann Köler.
Today it is a Lutheran church, open also for tourists. Tower of church is terrace for nice panorama of town.
Becouse of lack of money renovation of the churh is slow.
Old town of Cesis is one of nicest and the most interesting old towns in Baltic states. Cesis is a medieval town and some sights are remained till nowadays. Cesis has its old buildings on stone streets, church, castle.
Castle of Cesis or Castle of the Livonian Order - it is most attractive sight in Cesis ... I think.
It cost for you only 2 Lv, (about 2,8 EUR, 4,5 USD).
There are peoples in medieval costume at the ticket-kiosk, who giving to you medieval-lantern, which lighting in the tower of castle with candle-light you steps on the stairs. It's exciting ... You can climb on the stairs of castle, spend you time by walking in the castle courtyard ... and you can visit even the prison in the castle.
I think this castle worth to visiting ... at least I don't be regret ;)
German crusaders known as the Livonian Order began construction of a castle near the hill fort in 1209.
Once the most important castle of the Livonian order that also has been the official residence for orders chiefs of the order, it was partly destroyed during the Great Northern War.
When you needed just to spend the time by walking, you can do it in May Park in centre of city.
It is beautyful park with sculptures, fountains and flowers. There are some ducks and two beautyful black swan ... so view is magnificent.
The park was once known as the Alexei Park , a name given in 1904 in honor of the birth of Russian crown prince Alexei.
In the park there is the work of sculptor Karlis Jansons “Battle with Centour”, which has become one of the town’s most familiar symbols.
Since 2005 there is a pair of black swans from Lisbon.
Outside this church is usual, nothing attractive there I didn't found. Only the monk beside the church, with who it is good to take the picture :).
For me, as Estonians it was more important go inside to see the altar-painting, which was drawn by Estonian artist Johann Köler in 1858.
Adventure park in summer and skiing resort in winter.
Don't know how this park looks in winter, but in summer it's fantastic place: adventure park, amazing view and footpath in mountains.
Adventure park is very good occupation for active people or families with children over 12 years old.
Only one problem - huge prices.
St. John's church was built in late 13th century and it is largest church in northern Vidzeme.
This was the church of Livonian Order.
Church is going to be renewed soon.
Fee for visit to church tower: 0.5 Ls (~0.7 Euro)
