These are the caves with quite large entrances and passages where you can walk very easy, but not far. In old times in caves was ancient cult place with long ways. It is said, that they are more than 20 meters long. With caves there are connected some tales, which also connected with Cesis old castle. One youth wanted to get to the castle, he entered in the caves and also got to the castle, but there was belted so much, that he couldn't say anything. Therefore the caves have such name - big hell.Remember that in Latvia it's not allowed to walk into the caves.From cave flows out very clean spring water.
Near the castle there is located park with pond and sculptures. Also closely to the old castle ruins there are stairs, which lead to the New castle. In summer one can enjoy different events in the park, where is special open-air stage.If you go here, take with you bread, to feed here living ducks and swans.
This castle was built in the beginning of 13th century as the residence of Livonian order. This strongly fortified castle was in strategically important place, from here in the past times one can see both Latvia and Estonia, also in the castle gathered in that time famous leaders and conquers who decided many important things there. In the 16th century to the castle there were added towers, which were used for protection. But in the future wars, the castle was damaged a lot, after one of them it wasn't restored. Nowadays there are carried out research works, and also organized excursions.There are some tales, which are closely connected with castle, so one of them tells about secret treasures, which are hidden in the basement of castle.
Windmill was built in the middle of 19th century similar to Dutch windmills. It was built from boulders and was badly damaged during was, but nowadays restored. That kind of windmill was very popular in older times near the castles, and as in old times also nowadays you can take part in activity when corns and flour are milled.
This water castle is old settlement place where lived Latgalians, and probably it has survived from 9th century. This interesting castle consists from many small wooden houses and it looks like small city, which is located on Araisu lake. Nowadays here are managed well research works and found ancient inhabitants' jewelries and household objects.On the other side of the lake you can see Araisi Lutheran church.Entrance fee 0.60 Ls.
Near Amata river you can see Zvarte rock, which is one of the beautiful here in Latvia. It is formed more than more hundred years' ago and nowadays it is carefully preserved. Near the rock there is a small bridge, which crossing you can climb up the rock, but the bridge is special, if you're afraid of walking and swaying together, than better to cross it alone. That steep bank is more than 40 meters high and from there you can catch good views to surroundings and Amata river. In older times people thought, that here gather witches during solstice, therefore near the rock one can enjoy park with them.
More than twenty years ago, near river Gauja was established Gauja National park on purpose to protect rear plants, forest territories, to save and maintain this place's special landscape. Nowadays here are formed many airing trails. Here are also made special roads and routs for cyclists. I haven't go with bicycle there, but I like very much animal trail, during which you can enjoy walking through the forest. Here lives animals, which have been found, abandon or who can't life on their own. Going here, take with you binocular, because sometimes you can't see the animal, their territories are very wide, but some of them just waiting for new visitors. Here you can see bears, foxes, lynxes and other typical Latvian animals.Near the entrance you can ride horse, but during winter ride a cart.
The pont is the only one of such kinds in all Baltic States. It is wooden boat, but it doesn't look like boat, rather raft, which is moved by cable, and stream of river Gauja helps to move a boat. This type of moving was very popular thing in old times, when somebody wanted to cross the river.Nowadays, you can cross the river also taking with you your car.
Almost near Vidzemes highway you can see many waterfalls in one place, they are not very high, although very beautiful. The territory near the river is cleaned up and here also is made airing trail. It's worth to go to the end of airing trail, it's not very long, and during it you may see nice views to river and it's falls. On the left side of river there is ruins, in the past times here was located watermill.
