Amber is fossilized pine...

by vairab

Amber is fossilized pine resin. Baltic amber is around 30 - 40 million years old. Deposits are located both on the shore and on the seabed, and during storms amber is often washed up on the beaches of Latvia and Lithuania. Baltic amber was one of the most important products that first stimulated the antique world to show interest in Northern and Eastern Europe. Intensive trade of amber with the Roman Empire in the first to third centuries led to the establishment of the 'amber road', a trading route along which amber, or 'northern gold', as well as other products, moved. The Latvian Museum of Natural History has the largest collection of amber in Latvia. The collection has grown throughout the history of the Museum, and is still growing today. Currently it contains around 500 pieces, which includes amber of various types, colours and inclusions

hockey is important to Latvians ..

by vairab

After posting ninth and eleventh place finishes at the World Championships in 1998 and 1999 respectively, the Latvians reversed their negative trend last year. The team finished eighth after losing 3-1 to the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals, a leap forward compared to the results in the previous years. Perhaps the biggest success last year was posting a 3-2 upset win over Russia, on Russian soil in St. Petersburg. The win was huge for the small country and some players even hinted it had assumed an unrealistic importance. While that may be true, it shows that hockey is important to Latvians and that they are very proud of their team. A win was all Latvia needed to stay in the top division. And the Latvians made sure they would get it. Juris Opulskis and Sandis Ozolins both contributed two points as Latvia downed hapless Norway 3-0 in the final game of the Relegation Round. The win...

population of the black stork ...

by vairab

Few countries remain in the world whose territories are dominated by ecosystems largely untouched by man. Where forests, marshes, lakes and rivers have developed over the centuries at their own pace, with minimal human interference. Where pristine sandy beaches stretch for 300 km unspoiled by resorts, restaurants or hordes of holidaymakers. No where else in Europe will you find such a large population of the black stork and the lesser spotted eagle. They represent 10% and 12% respectively, of the world population of these rare species.Within 64,589 sq.km of territory, you will find hundreds of wolves and lynxes, 4,000 otters and 50,000 beavers.

the historical coat of arms of Riga..

by vairab

In 1988 after long discussions, it was decided to restore the historical coat of arms of Riga. In 1995, the Statute of Riga Symbolic was accepted. It stated that Riga has a big and a small coat of arms. “The big coat of arms: an open brick gate red with two turrets on a silver ground, a lion’s head in gold under the lifted grating of the gate. There are two crossed keys in black above the gate, as well as a cross and a crown in gold. The supporters: there are two lions in or gold with tongues in red looking backwards standing on a grey plinth. The small coat of arms is the shield of the big coat of arms.”

Tadenava is not simply the birthplace of the poet Rainis: it could be called ´the cradle of the poet's soul´ the source of love and sunshine described in his poetry. It is a place with a special atmosphere of enchantment and intense, almost primeval silence and peace. One can see that this place influenced Rainis in becoming the most outstanding Latvian poet, whose work is full of philosophical contemplation of eternity and the universe.Janis Rainis (1865-1929) is sometimes called the Latvian Shakespeare. A playwright, poet and political activist, Rainis has had a monumental influence on Latvian culture. After the 1905 revolution, he fled to Switzerland, where he wrote many of his key works, like the play Uguns un Nakts (Fire and Night)-a commentary on Latvian society. His wife, Aspazija (1868-1943) was also a leading poet, and early Latvian feminist. The museum was opened in...

There is a great place in Latvia not far from the capital. It's called Sigulda. Canyon covered with trees with Gauya river flowing pretty fast here and all these caves, castles and legends make altogether unforgetable impression especially if you visit this place during a rainy weather. It's Sigulda with remarkable landscape, Riga with its old part and Bauska mansion. Also Latvian food is a very interesting part of local culture.I always miss Latvian forests with pinetrees and hidden lakes, valleys, sea shore with long beautiful sandy beaches.

I was impressed by the old part of the city. There are many beautiful buildings and squares. Riga is very alive: there are lots of sport competitions and water shows. I liked parks in Riga - lots of fantastic trees and beautiful gardens.

I lived in Latvian for two years and the best thing about Latvian is without a doubt the days surrounding the Summer Solstice. It culminates in a festival called Janu Diena. If at all possible get to a small village and see all the dancing, singing, eating and drinking that goes along with this pagan holiday!! The short but sweet summers.

go to sigulda.... the switzerland of latvia according to LP. Unfortunately we spent very little time in riga but I think it's better to spare at least a couple of days. Another thing to see is that incredible palace near the border to lithuania.... the only stream operating ferry I ever met.... In cowboys movies you see the man operating the ferry puling a rope with lot of sweat.... This one was operated with a single hand. maybe the world is full of this kind of ferries but that one was my first one and I loved it!
