You think lavender fields are imaginable only in France or other southern countries? The answer is wrong - we also have lavender fields in Latvia. Of course they are not so huge as in France but they are. Very ambitious persons planted two lavender fields in Latvia - in Kurzeme and Vidzeme, and I had a curiosity and visited one in Kurzeme. It’s smaller than field in Vidzeme, but also is very charming and good smelling.
Why Latvia and lavenders sounds strange? Because we don't have long and hot summers like southern countries and on winters it’s possible black frost, and simply plants wither away. So if you decided to visit some of the lavender fields during your stay in Latvia - simply enjoy!
Kurzeme lavender fields is free of charge but take in mind you’re not allowed to cut lavender on you own.

Edole pils - a hidden gem
Latvia has several old houses and castles, a very old but quite original one is Edole pils, in Edole village, Kuldigas rajons.
It was in the process of being restored in the summer of 2002, with the inside of most rooms quite barren. But you can get a good impression of a 13th century bishop's castle, built by the "Livonian Order"
Ventpils - nice sea port
Ventspils is the six largest towns in Latvia, with a population of about 43000. The place location is a junction of two waters – Baltic Sea and Venta river.
The place was mentioned in 13th century first as a place for Livonian castle. It was characte4rised as quite big port town. In the beginning of 18th century Ventspils was quite destroyed because of wartimes (Swedish vs. Poland, Lithuania and later vs. Russia).
Nowadays it is quite beautiful town (despite that not so much of old things left). The place is quite refurbished, especially in recent years. The main sights are old town, statues of cows, beach, other places.
Sand tunnels of Riezupe
It is quite interesting attraction for people who visit Kuldiga region and Latvia. Actually it is sand tunnels to walk with candles and listen interesting stories, play games. Nowadays it is about 450 meters of tunnels is suitable for tourists.
Tunnels were dig in 1880 when owner wanted to get sand for glass making. About 2,5 kilometers of tunnels were dig, but later, especially in soviet times most of them were damaged. Nowadays it couldn’t be used for getting sand, so excursions are organized from 1999.
I liked the way that tunnels and small squares inside were “glued” by mysterious stories to make walk more interesting and spooky. It reminds me of corn labyrinths in Lithuania for playing spooky games.
It is not possible to visit tunnels in winder, as place is inhabited by bats.
Riezupe is possible about 10-20 kilometers from Kuldiga.
Waterfall in Kuldiga
There is a waterfall in Latvia!!! Who would have guested that? Well, in Kuldiga there is the river Venta and there is a beautiful waterfall, not specially high, but quite wide. Beautiful view of it from the bridge. In the summer you can go and have a swim and join the kids that play around the waterfall.
The Baltic sea is always at hand...
From Kuldiga it's only a short distance to the coastline, offering great beaches, often quite empty even in season!
One of them we found in Jurkalne, just outside Kuldiga district (rajons), some 30 km south of Ventspils and less than an hour's drive from Kuldiga.
Renda - centre of Abava valley
The Abava valley nature and landscape park offers a great stretch of unspoilt nature. Great for hiking, with many interesting corners, like this small waterfall (on Ivandas river) near Renda.
