The northern part of Liepaja city, called Karosta, is probably the most interesting thing for western tourists. Karosta used to be a secret military base of the Russian Empire, and later of Soviet Union. Now a very unique and special place for tourists and artists.Things to see in Karosta are -a wonderful seacoast with fortresses on it, one of them...more
The tourist info office suggested we should visit here, really does not look to spectacular from the outside but, once inside treated to the sight of a huge golden church organ. No photos allowed inside, a memorable sight and a must visit in Liepaja. If you're brave enough it's possible to climb the wooden stairs up the tower too, didn't make it...more
We found three bars in seaside park, one right on the beach itself. Over our two visits we managed to visit each - of course! All pleasant places to stop for a beer and snack.Fresh and tasty food and beer, with friendly service, wish I was there now.............Meduza just about our favourite.more
We used the bus to get there from Riga. Around 4 hours journey time on a comfortable, large bus. Several departures throughout the day. Liepaja has good connections with the surrounding area and several buses to Ventspils and Kuldiga too, some services are with smaller 16 seater coaches, a little crowded sometimes but comfortable enough.
There is a train from Riga too, I think only one a day, and this leaves very early in the morning.
Liepaja bus station is a good 20 minute walk from the centre along Rigas iela, the easy alternative is to jump on a tram heading that way - pay the driver or ticket from the kiosks around the bus station.
Liepaja is quite safe place to visit, people are very warm and helpful and most of young people speak english or german. But there are few things you always should be aware of like actually anywhere. Going out to a pub or bar or a night club make sure you know the price u pay for the drinks and the drinks of the girls that are making your company .
I havent been in Liepaja for a long time but there is this kinda thing when you order a drink for a dancer or a girl that works in particular night club then you gotta pay double the price/ special price, or you as a foreigner might be charged a bit 'extra' for your own drinks...
And out of bar/nightclub make sure you get a taxi, and dont walk in dark streets during nights as there are few areas where criminals might try to take advantage of you ( especially if you had a few drinks) meaning steal ur wallet or a mobile phone. that happens quite rare but as anywhere you should be aware. The most dangerous area is Karosta where during the day you can view the ruins of ex military part of the city.
Simple rule of safety. Other than that can't think what could spoil good time in Liepaja.. other than sand that might get in ur eyes cos of constant wind that we've got :)))
so enjoy your stay in Liepaja :)
The local soccer team, part of a giant metalworking company, and current (2005) Latvian champions play in the Daugava stadium in seaside park, lovely setting for a football stadium. Just missed a game by a couple of days but the gates were open so we were able to walk around, it's a neat and tidy place, would have enjoyed watching.
