Liepaja Things to Do

  • Visit the tourist office first.

For maps, information and general assistance I recommend you visit the tourist information office first. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff gave us a good guide book and plenty of ideas how to spend our time in Liepaja.

  • Karosta - former secret military town in...

The northern part of Liepaja city, called Karosta, is probably the most interesting thing for western tourists. Karosta used to be a secret military base of the Russian Empire, and later of Soviet Union. Now a very unique and special place for tourists and artists.Things to see in Karosta are -a wonderful seacoast with fortresses on it, one of them...

  • Sailors monument

At one end of seaside park, a reminder that the sea is not always a good place to be. Remembers sailors of all nationalities.

  • Beach

A relaxing afternoon on the beautiful white sand beach. It's clean, there's a blue flag and stretches for miles, excellent.

  • Seaside park

Between the town and beach, a large area of shady parkland with fountains and flowers. Lovely place to shelter from a scorching sun.

  • Flower displays

THere are several flower displays around the town, this one a butterfly, looks stunning? it's just outside the townhall.

  • Amber clock

Amber is found all along the coastline, by the promenade is a clock made from it, worth a few minutes of anyones time.

  • Promenade

Not by the sea as we'd expected but along the canal that cut's the town in two. This is an area that's being smartened up, pleasant walk, watching the boats heading out to sea, with some other attractions, see later tips.

  • Sv Trisvienibas - Holy Trinity Church

The tourist info office suggested we should visit here, really does not look to spectacular from the outside but, once inside treated to the sight of a huge golden church organ. No photos allowed inside, a memorable sight and a must visit in Liepaja. If you're brave enough it's possible to climb the wooden stairs up the tower too, didn't make it...

Liepaja Restaurants

  • Bars in seaside park

We found three bars in seaside park, one right on the beach itself. Over our two visits we managed to visit each - of course! All pleasant places to stop for a beer and snack.Fresh and tasty food and beer, with friendly service, wish I was there now.............Meduza just about our favourite.

  • Barons Bumbier's

City centre restaurant, in Kurzeme shopping area. Nicely decorated inside and a good outside eating area too. Multilingual staff and menu helped us choose good tasty Latvian food. an enjoyable evening.

  • Pastnieka Maja

For us the immediate attraction was the large outdoor terrace, as we visited on a warm evening, great choice.Friendly, great food at a good price.A good place to eat - recommended.

We used the bus to get there from Riga. Around 4 hours journey time on a comfortable, large bus. Several departures throughout the day. Liepaja has good connections with the surrounding area and several buses to Ventspils and Kuldiga too, some services are with smaller 16 seater coaches, a little crowded sometimes but comfortable enough.
There is a train from Riga too, I think only one a day, and this leaves very early in the morning.
Liepaja bus station is a good 20 minute walk from the centre along Rigas iela, the easy alternative is to jump on a tram heading that way - pay the driver or ticket from the kiosks around the bus station.

Liepaja Warnings and Dangers

  • by laliketu Updated Jul 9, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Liepaja is quite safe place to visit, people are very warm and helpful and most of young people speak english or german. But there are few things you always should be aware of like actually anywhere. Going out to a pub or bar or a night club make sure you know the price u pay for the drinks and the drinks of the girls that are making your company .
I havent been in Liepaja for a long time but there is this kinda thing when you order a drink for a dancer or a girl that works in particular night club then you gotta pay double the price/ special price, or you as a foreigner might be charged a bit 'extra' for your own drinks...
And out of bar/nightclub make sure you get a taxi, and dont walk in dark streets during nights as there are few areas where criminals might try to take advantage of you ( especially if you had a few drinks) meaning steal ur wallet or a mobile phone. that happens quite rare but as anywhere you should be aware. The most dangerous area is Karosta where during the day you can view the ruins of ex military part of the city.
Simple rule of safety. Other than that can't think what could spoil good time in Liepaja.. other than sand that might get in ur eyes cos of constant wind that we've got :)))
so enjoy your stay in Liepaja :)

The local soccer team, part of a giant metalworking company, and current (2005) Latvian champions play in the Daugava stadium in seaside park, lovely setting for a football stadium. Just missed a game by a couple of days but the gates were open so we were able to walk around, it's a neat and tidy place, would have enjoyed watching.
