Travelling inside Latvia ? rustic country

by LanaFromRiga

The travelling inside the country became very popular not only between tourists. Very often people from Riga go away from crowded city to enjoy calm and beautiful Latvia, choosing to live in rural guests houses during all holidays. These homes are located in a clean and well kempt countryside environment and, often, they are traditional farmsteads built and furnished with natural materials not harmful to man: wood, stone, reeds, linen ect. Guests are offered food organically grown by the host and various outdoor activities: bicycle rides, hiking, animal watching etc. as well as excursions to local noteworthy sites and celebrations of annual festivals according to ancient traditions.

Go to KOLKA !!!

by josecarlos

We all know that the Baltic Sea is not the warmest on earth. But a part from that little inconvenience, you will be delighted by the romanticism and magic of Latvian beaches. If you go to the Northwest of the country, you can visit Kolka, a very nice pleace where you can do some camping and enjoy a bonfire by the beach. Instead of palm trees, you´ll have beautiful woods by the sea side. An incredible experience. And if you like everlasting and lovely sunsets, this is the place where you must head to.

Gaigalas House in Nida

by niamey00

Nida village is close to the LIthuanian border, NOT to be confused with the much larger and famous Nida, Lithuania! The owners of the farmstead are beachcombers extraordinaire and have decorated their house and yard with things washed up by the sea. They will also sell you 100g of amber for about 5 lats (US$8.00) if you are interested.

Edole Palace

by Lilasel

The first written material about Edole dates back to the year 1230. The Edole palace is one of the most interesting objects worth seeing in the area. It was built by the Bishop of Kurland in 1265, but afterwards, in 1561, it was acquired by Ulrich von Beer from Hannover. Nothing is left over from the ramparts and fortification structures of the by-gone times, the palace itself has suffered several times in wars and fires, has been largely rebuilt and renovated. The palace present outlook was on the whole given during the 30-ies of 19th c.

Ostriches

by Lilasel

Apparently, it is not necessary to go to Australia or the Riga Zoo, to watch these huge birds and their behavior. This can be done also in the homestead "Viesturi", Robeznieki parish, Kraslava district. A very kind owner will always find time to inform you about ostriches and their peculiarities. It is true that they are capricious, however, they can perfectly get adapted to the Latvian climate.

Ventspils

by rollinstone81

I guess Ventspils is somewhat of the beaten track, not too many backpackers make it here. But why? I find the beach in Ventspils much much nicer and cleaner then Jurmala. The city itself is the cleanest in the region, as it is one of the wealthiest cities as well. They have an important harbour here, and if I m not wrong there is oil business here, which is why the latvian gouvernment has occasional trouble with Moscow. However the city is pleasant, the beach is nice, you can visit the Livonian Order Castle from the 13th century, it's right at the harbour front. The city itself dates back to 1244, used to be in the Hanseatic League from 14th to 16th century, after that the duke of Courland used the harbour of Ventspils. The german name of the city is Windau, and after the German army retreated and the Soviets approached the city became more and more important since its harbour is...

The quiet life thats not far from Riga

by crewsada

Here is Kemeri national park. Great fro walking and full of birdlife and scenary. Must be worth the 1.5 lat return(about 75p/1 usd) fare on the train from Riga central station. Here is a beautifal walk and will take about 1.5 hrs to do at regular pace if you want to visit the peat bog as well. No entry fee for the park, but take a lunch with you as theres little opportunities for buying once there. During mid-summer there are a few bugs about so its worth taking the usual precautions. The nearest station is Kemeri pictured below and takes about 50 mins to get to from Riga.

Baltic Riveria

by mancocapac30

The weather cleared and we decided to head to the "Baltic Riviera" -- the seaside town of Jurmala. We had the beach to ourselves. The water was warm, but very shallow and calm -- more like a big lake!

What this?

by vairab

At sunny week-ends local residents and visitors of Ventspils like to walk down Ostas street along the River Venta; other popular places are the fountains "Ship Contemplator" and "Boats of The Sun" and the tidy and modern city centre. During summers the most popular spot is the city beach, that has been awarded the Blue Flag and Aquapark. The city parks and squares are nice places for having a chat. Some people might love to have good time at the skate-park, but children gather at the Children's Town (the Children's Recreation park).

If you are fond of virgin nature, the atmosphere of a medieval town, the hospitality of people and the opportunity to participate in excellent cultural activities never experienced before, then Kuldiga is the right place for you to spend your holidays
