In the north-eastern corner of the Vidzeme province is the town of Aluksne, nestling on the shore of the Aluksne lake. In the town centre, between the lake and Pils Street, is Aluksne's Lutheran church, built between 1781 and 1788 on a foundation of natural rock. Unusually for a Latvian church, the walls are not plastered but of rubble. As you go towards Pils Street you'll come across the E. Gluck Bible Museum, named after the man who first translated the Bible into Latvian: until the 19th century spiritual books were the only ones available to Latvians. This museum contains a fascinating collection of sermons, texts and hymnbooks. Only a kilometre out of town, along the lakeshore, is the entrance to the Aluksne park, created at the end of the 18th century. A wooden bridge will take you across o Pilssala ('Castle Island'), with its castle ruins and open-air theatre. Nearly 33 km long...

Former Soviet Rocket Base

by histamin32

Some 4 km west of Eleja (a small town south of Jelgava) is a turn off to the left from the P103 into a forest. This small concrete road leads to an abandoned Soviet rocket base. There are four domes that cover the former launch bases and a bunker system in the middle, including storage rooms for rockets. Not to be seen everywhere ...

Jurmala

A coastal resort near Riga. The country is so small, that Riga is the only city. The rest of the country can almost be considered as its suburbs. The landscape is boring: flat, covered with pastures, farmland, forests and many lakes.

Enjoy the lovely Latvian nature

by diamond7

Latvia is just the most forested country in Europe. 1/3 of its population lives in the Riga the capital (800 000 inhabitants), the rest of country is a lot of forests, and there aren’t others big cities, excepting Daugavpils the second city, with 120 000 inhabitants. All the other towns have less then 100 000 inhabitants. That means, you can find some small towns as Sigulda, Cesis or Valmiera with only about 10 000 people that are some of the most important destinies in Latvia. My recommendation is, in Latvia became a discover, its lakes, forests, small towns and the lovely nature are waiting…

Latgale

by Lilasel

Latgale is an ancient and singular state in the eastern part of Latvia and is separated from the rest of Latvia by three rivers. Latgale is rightly called the Land of Blue Lakes or Lakeland. People who are knowledgeable about Latgale say that there are about a thousand lakes in it.

View the city

by Whoopi

If you want to have a really good look at things from above, you can take a ride with some of these small motorised "hanggliders", I'm not sure what this thing is called but it was great.....the guy flying us was crazy, he was diving, circling and used any trick in the book to scare us up in the air. What a nice rush!

Parachute

by Whoopi

If you jump out of a plane with one of the parachutes they offer you in Riga, you are a very brave/stupid/adventurous/poor person.....however it was a great experience. We jumped from an old Sovjet plane with old parachutes. We jumped alone on the first jump, the only basis we had was a two hours course about landing and packing the parachute, and the instructur only spoke russian....and a little bit latvian. Our friend could translate some of it.....but it was a bit scary.... this experience for life cost us about 15$.....and worth ten times the price!

Here's a small cave near the Gauja National Park. It's walls are sandstone and there's some ancient carvings from way back when, as well as more recent carvings. I would have carved my name but didn't have time.

The sea and coastal zone,...

by vairab

The sea and coastal zone, which stretches 494 kilometres along the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga, is an important part of the Latvian landscape. Sand dunes of up to 32 metres, sandy beaches, rivers and their estuaries, forests, marshes and lakes form a continuous ecosystem that has developed as a result of interaction of the land and sea. During the 50-year Soviet occupation most of the coast was a restricted area because it was considered a frontier zone. Commercial and recreational activity within this area was restricted. Today, this zone is still home to picturesque fishing villages that appear to have stepped out of a page in history. These villages were originally settled by the Livs, an ancient Finno-Ugric tribe that lived along the Baltic coast. Coastal fishing traditions are essential part of Latvian culture. A fishing expedition with local fisherman, including preparation of...
