This place is a few blocks away from the old town and the traditional tourist tracks. It is located in the backyard of Riga new theatre. The light and cosy interior is fusion style as well as the food there. Service is friendly, a bit familiar. The trout there was delicious. See food soup - never seen that much creatures in one plate... Worse trying!
"Mazais Ansis" is located on the side of Incukalna highway, by the water. It's really a nice and cosy place for to have a break while travelling inside Latvia or going further. The interior has an ancient spirit. Also, for those who wish to stay overnight may use the guesthouse.
We wanted to try some local Latvian dishes and when during our visit to The Open Air Museum in the outskirts of Riga we got hungry, we went to the bar and took grey peas with pork scratchings and onion. Although it looked...let's say not good, it tasted unexpectedly yummi.
A chain reastaurant offerring plain but good food . A kind of self-service. Worth visiting if you don't want to waste too much time waiting for the staff and eat well choosing the dishes using your finger :-)
Great place just in the heart of the Old Town. Very humble , looking rather like a "milk bar" in Poland but the dishes are worth visiting it. A wide variety of pielmieni -cooked and baked- stuffed with meat, potatoes, spinach, mushrooms and so on. It's self-service so you just take a bowl and fill it with pielmieni, add melted butter and sour cream, maybe some salads and go to the scales. The price is about 3,50 lats per kilo.
It's a chain cafe which can be found in Latvia and Lithuania (maybe also somwhere else!) . This one we visited was in Riga. Wonderful coffee and chocolate, tasty desserts- what more would you like to have after a few hours of sightseeing in freezing cold? Believe me- nothing!
I wanted to drink some coffee and that's why we went to the cafe in the castle's courtyard. We ordered a cappuccino and it was too much. After half an hour of waiting we were given huge mugs full of...that's it- what was that?! Probably a tiny portion of instant "cappuccino" in a big amount of water.
Lido is a chain in latvia, its set up buffet style but you pay for each individual item on your plate. Its really good food and the prices are reasonable. They have one location in latvia that seats a few hundred people. Ask anyone where it is and you will be pointed in the right direction.
Just spent a few days in Riga and thought to get a steak - I looked into 4-5 places in the Old Town and was REALLY surprised at the prices of almost any kind of steak. It seemed one would have to pay 20-30 Euros in any of these places -- 25 to close to 40 US Dollars.That's really quite amazing compared to the price of other food in Riga. And there should be plenty of competition with the raw material - Tenderloin from Brazil RETAILS in Finland (another EU country) for 13,90 - admittedly special offers.Even Friday's was taking - IMO - rather high prices when you realize this is a 'push 'em in, push 'em out' type place.
Atmosphere is what makes this place special, as well as wonderful service and great dishes. Located in one of nicest building quarters in Riga (Berga Bazars) it is a wonderful place where to have a delicious business lunch, chill out with friends or have a quiet dinner Warm winter pie with blackcurrant
