The harbour in winter by LanaFromRiga It's the place where the main river of Latvia Daugava in outfalls in the Riga's Gulf. The place is callen "Mangalsala". There are teo breakwaters in this place: one in the left bank of Daugava - Bolderaja and the second in the right bank - Mangalsala.
Many people go there to see sunsent, to have a good time, to see ships are going in or out the harbour. It's one of my favourite places in Riga. Leave a Comment

by vairab Latvia has long been known abroad for Riga Black Balsam, which has become a sort of national 'brand name' and a favourite souvenir. The unusual dark, strong, quite thick drink resembling a liqueur has long been regarded as possessing various medicinal properties. The history of Riga Black Balsam stretches right back to the 18th century. Regarded as the originator of the recipe is Abraham Kunze, who lived in Riga in the middle of the 18th century. Kunze developed his balsam from the medicinal recipes of 16th and 17th century Riga apothecaries. The exact recipe is still a carefully-guarded secret, but it is known to consist of 25 ingredients, including berry juices and various plant, herb and root essences. As it changed and developed, the balsam obtained already in 1860 its first medal at a trade exhibition in St Petersburg. 'Riga Black Balsam' is nowadays made by only one company, Latvijas balzams, and has received several international awards. Leave a Comment

I spent some time thinking about how I wanted to allocate our days and I think I allocated pretty well between Vilnius and Riga. If you are doing a tour of the Baltics, I would allocate a minimum of 3 days to Riga, preferably 4. 1 day to tour Old Riga 1 day to tour New Riga and the Art Nouveau architecture 1 day for a day trip to Sigulda 1 day for a day trip to Rundale And although I have Sigulda under my must sees and Rundale under off the beaten path, if you are a fan of baroque palaces, Rundale is really worth the trip out and I would do it before Sigulda. Near the Bremen musicians statue by juliev I've never been in Riga before and decided to go spontaneously with my working collegues ... I'm so happy about it cause I understood that such little weekend break gives many impressions for the weeks, days till the other travel. And how surprised and delighted I was when I saw the Bremen musicians statue on one street of the Old Town! It reminded me of those animated cartoon (called "The Bremen musicians") we all watched, the great songs from there ... so if I had a chance I'd take u to this Bremen musicians statue where we could think about our big wish, hold to its peace and probably our wish would come true ... in the nearest future ....
The Old Town in Riga is very beautiful, colourful and architecturally rich, so don't miss it! Going home, buy Latvian Balsam (in such brown earthernware bottles) or Latvian Balsams Vodka of different tastes (vanilla, cranberry); very tasty sweets in "Laima" branded shops or some pretty beer mugs. Girls could look for the 'Lauma" underwear that is good quality and not expensive. Finally, full of impressions and nice shopping stuff, u'll go and promise to come back there again ... :) Leave a Comment
