Walk the streets of the Old...

by vilkas

Walk the streets of the Old Town and explore the magnificent churches. Many of the old merchants' homes and warehouses are also interesting, having a faintly Germanic character like much of the city. Riga 'castle' is not much to look at, but if you are a military history buff you will enjoy the military museum in Pulvertonis, the Powder Tower.Curiously, in 1995 the Powder Tower museum included an exhibit on Latvians in the Waffen SS during World War II. I don't know if it's still there. While some may find this offensive, there are many Latvians who view the Waffen SS veterans as heroes. This is a matter of intense national controversy, and a bitter bone of contention between Latvians and Russians in Latvia.

This used to be some kind of...

by milge

This used to be some kind of must for me when I was there, so I recommend you to walk around in old Riga for sure but not in those streets that everyone knows... Don't forget there is always something to explore in the 'Old town'... And don't forget to go to 'Sigulda' another beautiful town which is just an hour far away from riga. And of course 'Liepaja' as well, I call that city 'The city of Rockers'. it's quite a small city but has quite much to offer too (the weird thing about Liepaja is: everyone can play at least one insturement) hmmm....what else... Anyway find the rest on your own :) I was the barmen of a small bar for just one night... It was cool, I was serving the barmen some coctails and stuff. (it was a night that all the people and I had quite much of 'Moskovskaya' vodka)

Vernissage disco on a 'good'...

by Herb4004

Vernissage disco on a 'good' night [ie weekend]. There are several other wild places but this has a up-and-down piece of dance floor and hundreds of great dancers. Unbelievably gorgeous women, often Russian but Latvian also. All ages from kidlets to grandmothers. There is a delightful shortage of men (at least, of men willing to be serious). Disco dancers are 70-80 percent young women.

Go to the Old Town! Gothic...

by DanaK

Go to the Old Town! Gothic chirches and ancient buildings are there reminding of the Middle ages. The 'open-air museum' contains more than 150 architectural monuments. During the autumn, when the weather is quite often rany, you will certainly find 'shelters' in numerious cafes situated in the Old town. Walk through the labyrinth of cobble stoned streets in the old town which makes you feel like you have made a journey in time!

Walk towards to river bank...

by barcodex

Walk towards to river bank from the St. Peter's Cathedral - you will get on the square, earlier named by Latvian Red Shooters - Latvian communist revolutionaries (of course, it holds another name nowadays). This sculpture was on its place in 1997, but it was destroyed recently - every ideology switch is accompanied by destroying old monuments... I heard that there is a 'Museum of Occupation' opened on this square instead.

Visit St. Peter's Cathedral....

by barcodex

Visit St. Peter's Cathedral. It is eqipped with an elevator for getting to cathedral's top and have a view of a city. Elevator's operator is able to say a great text about a church and elevator in a lot of different european languages :) This lovely sculpture of Bremen musicians we touch on this picture, resides just near the cathedral.
