Riga's panorama by ginte For to see that you need to find "Reval Hotel Latvia" close to downtown. Then use two glass elevators for to get up to the 25th floor. Actually you won't find 25th floor's button in these elevators, so push 24th floor button and then use stairs to the 25th floor. There you'll find a cosy area with a view through the window to all Riga. Leave a Comment

Academy of Science by Dabs Built by the Soviets during the time when Joseph Stalin ruled the Soviet Union, the Academy of Science building was the only one I saw that reminded me of Soviet architecture, resembling Stalin's seven sisters in Moscow. Although some people find this style of architecture unappealing, I think it is quite grand. Local nicknames for this building are Stalin's birthday cake or the Kremlin. In Your Pocket says "If you look close enough you can spot several hammers and sickles" but unfortunately I read that after I returned home Locate at Turgeneva iela 19, not too far from the Central Market Leave a Comment

Rundale Palace by Dabs The last thing you expect to see in the middle of nowhere is this fabulous canary yellow confection of a palace, designed by Rastrelli, the man responsible for the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. This is a little harder daytrip to do from Riga, if you are traveling by public transport you have to take a bus to Bauska and then catch a bus to Pilsrundale. I've posted more tips and photos over on my Rundale page. Leave a Comment

Monument of Bremen musicians' by ginte OK. It was dark enough while taking this photo, but I hope you still can see something behind my boyfriend and me.:) I'm not sure if you know the story about the Bremen musicians, as I don't know it either. :) I just saw the cartoon of them in my childhood. So, it was cute to have a photo near the monument of them in an Old town of Riga, almost in front of the "Lotuss". Leave a Comment

Reval Hotel Latvia by ginte Here is Reval Hotel Latvia from which 25th floor you can see a wondeful panorama of Riga. The building is quite big, so you will easily notice it from downtown. Direction: find the Freedom monument, then cross the bridge near it and go straight a little bit. Leave a Comment

stairs in the house of Art Nouveau by LanaFromRiga Art Nouveau or often also refrred to as Jugendstil in there regions, is one of the styles that dominates Riga's architectural heritage. Spread thraoughout the city, but you will find the most expressive specimens concentradet on the mentioned streets (Alberta str., Elizabetes str., Vilandes str., Strelnieku str.). Most of these buildings are constructed by the architect M.Elisenstein. Leave a Comment

Changing of the guard by Dabs I'm not sure how often it happens, we happened to be there when they were changing the guard in front of the Riga Castle. I wouldn't go out of my way to see this, it's a pretty simple ceremony that involves the two guards being relieved of their duties by two other men and 1 more to escort them, I guess. Right before they passed thru the door back into the palace, the three very serious looking guards dropped their serious expressions and started walking normally, I thought it rather curious that they didn't wait until they were out of view. if you did not behave well... by in4ik Authentic houses, farmsteads, windmills, wodden churches, and fishermen's villages that represent different regions of Latvia of 16th to 19th centuries. Situated in the pine forest by the lake Jugla, it occupies an area of about a 100 hectares. On weekends you can watch traditional craftmen at work. Count on spending an entire day here. A MUST! by in4ik Certain places in Riga change their look by night! Start at Congress Hall near Colored Fountain (all colors of rainbow). Then walk down to the Old Town through the Basteja Park and enjoy lights from lanterns. Pass the Freedom Monument and Laima Clock, the central meeting point in Riga. Cross the Old Town on Kalku Street and enjoy the view of artificially restored building on Ratslaukums by night. Then I would suggest to have a walk on Daugava river bank along the Old Town. The last spot would be Berga Bazars betweeb Elizabetes and Dzirnavu streets. For that you'd need to cross the Old Town again. Leave a Comment
