Bremen musicians' monument

by ginte

OK. It was dark enough while taking this photo, but I hope you still can see something behind my boyfriend and me.:) I'm not sure if you know the story about the Bremen musicians, as I don't know it either. :) I just saw the cartoon of them in my childhood. So, it was cute to have a photo near the monument of them in an Old town of Riga, almost in front of the "Lotuss".

The monument

Near of the church in Chiekurkalns you can see a strange monument. It is a symbol of different religions. There are words about christian religion, David star and title "Take off your shoes" like in buddist churches.

Art Nouveau archicture

Art Nouveau or often also refrred to as Jugendstil in there regions, is one of the styles that dominates Riga's architectural heritage. Spread thraoughout the city, but you will find the most expressive specimens concentradet on the mentioned streets (Alberta str., Elizabetes str., Vilandes str., Strelnieku str.). Most of these buildings are constructed by the architect M.Elisenstein.

Authentic houses, farmsteads, windmills, wodden churches, and fishermen's villages that represent different regions of Latvia of 16th to 19th centuries.Situated in the pine forest by the lake Jugla, it occupies an area of about a 100 hectares. On weekends you can watch traditional craftmen at work.Count on spending an entire day here. A MUST!

Experience the REAL Latvia!

by in4ik

If you have more than 2 days to spend in Latvia and want to see something else besides beautiful girls and architecture in Riga, I would advise to try out the Latvian countryside. Go to http://www.celotajs.lv/ and check out listings of guest houses that are located in the coutryside. I would suggest LATGALE region, esle called as "Lake Land". You could real Latvian food, sauna, fishing, and horse riding. From my experience, you have to plan ahead as the best locations get booked quite quickly. The Association "Lauku ceïotâjs" was formed in 1993 and its current members are the owners/operators of 220 rest and recreation facilities in the countryside. The Association's goal is a common development of tourism in the Latvian countryside in order to create modern rest and recreation facilities in a natural countryside environment. It would be the best source for country holidays planning.

Riga by Night

by in4ik

Certain places in Riga change their look by night! Start at Congress Hall near Colored Fountain (all colors of rainbow). Then walk down to the Old Town through the Basteja Park and enjoy lights from lanterns. Pass the Freedom Monument and Laima Clock, the central meeting point in Riga. Cross the Old Town on Kalku Street and enjoy the view of artificially restored building on Ratslaukums by night. Then I would suggest to have a walk on Daugava river bank along the Old Town. The last spot would be Berga Bazars betweeb Elizabetes and Dzirnavu streets. For that you'd need to cross the Old Town again.

Jurmala

by annamantere

Take a localtrain to Jurmala seashore. There´s a 20 km long (!) sandy beach where you can enjoy a nice swim or just a looong walk if you prefer... Little towns by the beach have beautiful really old houses, nice cafes, restaurants etc. It´s a nice daytrip.

Riga's Central Market

by lichinga

Riga's Central MarketSmoked pork, smoked meat, smoked eeels, smoked mackerels, smoked trouts, smoked salmons, smoked lampreys.... everything seems to be smoked before selling in the Riga Central market! The market itself, beside a large non-food section, offers a wide range of cheese, vegetables (well, not so great a choice in winter.... of course), meats and fishes: it lies very close to the bus station at the edge of Riga's old Centre, on the banks of the mighty Daugava river. Did you know in nobody wants to consider the work to be finished, because the legend has it that Riga will be drawn by the river once it's finished! The indoor section of the market (it's open also on Sundays morning) is hosted within the ancient warehouse that once belonged to the famous Zeppelin and have been transported to Riga after WWII. Among the wide variety of dried legumes, the most peculiar and typical...

The Cat House (and before you ask, no, it isn't THAT kind of cat house!! LOL)This is an interesting building that was named forthe 2 black cats standing on the tops of the towers. The sculptor of the cats died while erecting them. Then, about 100 years ago the owner of the building, when he was excluded from the the powerful Guild across the street had the cats turned around so that their backsides were facing the Guild building as an insult. After a court battle they were turned back around and he was admitted to the guild.

When buying gifts like the local amber-jewellery, compare shop prices with street merchants. They will most likely have lower prices. Prices are presumably fixed. Street-merchants concentrate around churches. In Riga, foreign currency is accepted at reasonable rates, escpecially for USD and DeutschMark (now Euro).
