The first snow in the Baltic States arrives in November, but the real skiing season begins only around Christmas time and lasts till the end of March. The average temperature in winter is -2 degrees (C) and with January being the coldest month. The heaviest snowfall in the Baltics occurs in southern Estonia and northeastern Latvia – and that’s where the most popular ski hills and tracks are located. These hills have well groomed ski runs of varying difficulty, tows, night lighting and snow-making equipment. Cafes or snack bars and equipment rental shops where you can rent skiis, boots, snowboards and other gear are nearby.

Riga is not only the backbone of Latvia's economy but also the largest center of education and science. This is confirmed by a large number of cultural events, international exhibitions, scientific conferences and seminars that every year take place in Riga.

  • Beware! You will need the warmest sweater you have, made from the wool of the friendliest lamb you know. Honestly. In winter, there is lots of wind in Riga. It always surprises me as soon as i step out of the bus. It has always been rather chilly when i go there after November.

    Nothing special to pack

  • The train and bus stations are walkable from Old Riga, I was glad that I packed light. Since we were staying at the same hotel before and after Vilnius, we left most of our luggage at the hotel and just took the minimum of what we needed.

A lot of the streets are cobblestone, so bring good walking shoes. It was only warm enough for sandals on the last couple of days.

Don't pack tight pants or you will be sorry!

Late May was still cool enough that I needed a light sweater. I also brought a water proof jacket which came in handy the first couple of days.

Our midrange hotel had no toiletries besides soap so it's a good idea to bring your own or you can buy at the local stores.

Bring lots and lots of film/memory for this city if you are an architecture fan.
