Nostalgiga: Nostalgiga

by kenbac

I understand this was a Soviet Cafe. Very interesting interior décor! It’s worth going to just to see that alone. Very pleasant ambience! Extensive menu, but I thought it was a little expensive for Latvia. On my first visit to Riga, I went twice, so I must have liked it. Had a coffee on the first visit and a beer on the other. On my second visit I had breakfast there as I had missed it in my hotel. Very good indeed! Very pleasant staff! Great location for people watching! Try for a window table.

4 Rooms: Good and nice restaurant...

by Thoomuch

The food is tasty and good. We did choose barbecue, and it was really tasty!!In the summertime they do also have an outdoor part of the restaurant so you can see a lot of outdoor bars and restaurants in old town (and lot of people).....maybe this is a strange BUT dont miss to go to the restaurants WC/restrooms......i have never seen such so nice designed WC in my life (mixed of old and new) SO COOL!!!I want to have that in my house........ The food was good....but also try the Riga Coffee.......nicely served in big cups (it is coffe with wipped cream and Riga Balsam liquor in it)....very good indeed!!

Apsara tea rooms: Forgetting the time in soft pillows

by sphynxxs

It´s tea time here - they claim to serve 70 sorts of tea here, and you can pick the atmosphere. At ground level in this small medieval building you have the European tea room with fireplace, downstairs in the basement you can sink into the pillows in a Indo-Asian atmosphere with tranquil music, sipping your tea from a flat table and completely forget about time. it´s not just the tea, it´s the place.... when I was in Riga it was cool and raining a lot, but all this was soon forgotten.... i

double Coffee: coffee haven and wireless spot

by sphynxxs

a nice place to sip a coffee or tea while spotting life outside on the streets - one location is on a boulevard, the other right in the city centre. coffee is the motto here - beginning with coffeebeans as inlays on the tables. If you have your notebook along, you can get into the internet while sipping your coffee - there is wireless connection. it´s also a good place to have breakfast - there are several breakfast offers on the menu, as well as pancakes or blini for lunch a smooth caffe latte or capucchino during a rest or a stron espresso (also double and triple versions if you need a stronger caffeine shot!)

Staburags: Latvian kitsch

by RB_Oakes

The Latvian equivalent of Chlopski Jadlo, the Polish "peasant food" outlet. I dug the grey peas and bacon, though it costs more here than even in the heart of the old town. Decent beers on offer - from Lido (the owner) and Uzava. The fried rye bread comes with garlic in Latvia (as opposed to Lithuania) and is much better for it. English speaking menu and service. Grey peas with bacon. Sounds awesome, right? It is pretty good, and a testament to the fact that pork fat really does make anything tasty. The peas are less like the green ones you know and closer to kidney beans in flavour and purple chick peas in appearance. Lots of grease at the bottom of the bowl makes the last bit inedible though.

Malibu Pizza: Yet more pizza

by Dabs

Our third and final pizza restaurant was Pizza Malibu, it was also good pizza but Cili Pizza still takes the top pizza prize from me.The interior of the restaurant was a little gimmicky, but it reminded me more of Hawaii than it did Malibu, especially the leis that the waitresses wore.We ate downstairs but saw many people coming from the second level.

Pizza Jazz: Something from Lithuania

by ginte

It was a nice surprise to see famous Lithuanian pizzas-net "PizzaJazz" in Riga, as well. Unfortunatelly we haven't go in, because of the lack of the time. But I'm sure the meal should be the same as in Lithuania. Then you just MUST try it ;-)

Vermanitis: More hearty cafeteria style Latvian food

by Dabs

Vermanitis is similar to Dzirnavas, both are owned by the Lido group, both are cafeteria style with similar pricing. I think there is less seating at this restaurant, it was almost full on the day we went for lunch. The interior was a little more modern, if you want more of a old world ambiance go to Dzirnavas. Same type of food as Dzirnavas-lots of meat, fried potatoes, blintzes, potato pancakes. The desserts here looked really good so I grabbed one, it was not what it appeared to be and not nearly as tasty or as sweet as I thought it would be. I would stick to the fruit filled blintzes for dessert, the banana ones were really good!

Dzirnavas (the Mill): Hearty cafeteria style Latvian food

by Dabs

Part of the very popular Lido group of restaurants, this was the best place we ate at in Riga, I liked it so much we ate here twice. The food is served cafeteria style, but unlike a lot of buffet type restaurants, the food has mostly just been cooked and is still piping hot. Grab a tray and the servers, who all spoke English very well, will dish up what you want to eat. The prices for the food is listed on cards near the serving stations but at these low prices I never bothered to look. This place had a MUCH bigger selection than Alus Seta, the Lido restaurant in Old Riga, so if you are willing to walk just a bit further, you should go here instead. And maybe you can justify adding one more thing to your plate ;-)On our first time thru I made the mistake of not looking at the whole buffet, the buffet goes on for several rooms so make sure you peruse the whole thing before starting to...
