McDonald's: Fast food American style

There are refreshingly few American fast food outlets in Riga, besides this McDonald's, I only saw one other in Riga plus a couple of Baskin Robbins ice cream carts and a TGIFriday's. Riga is filled with good inexpensive local options to try, so why stop here?I confess though that we went in here twice, overseas McDonald's still fry their apple pies, American ones bake them (like anyone goes to McDonald's for healthy food!!!). So we stopped in for a fried apple pie with a caramel sundae to dip it in :-)Sometimes foreign McDonald's will have some interesting variation on the menu like corn pies or Chicken McNuggets with wasabi sauce in Asia, nothing exotic here.

Cili Pizza: Best pizza in Riga

Cili Pizza, a Lithuanian chain, gets my vote for the best pizza in Riga. We stopped at the location near Stockman's Department store twice to have pizza.It's a busy place, we had a short wait to get a table but service is quick and the pizzas don't take long to make since they are thin crust. Pizzas in Riga are a bit different than American pizzas. Most of the pizzas are loaded with 5 or more ingredients and are actually quite colorful. They don't have much tomato sauce but they do have bottles of ketchup on the table if you need the tomato flavor. I thought they were good without the ketchup.The first time we went we both ordered normale size, a little too big even if very hungry, maza was a better size if you each want to order your own.

Patio Pizza: More good pizza

We alternated between Latvian food and pizza, my husband is a pizza junkie and we eat it in almost every city we go to.The pizza here is made in a wood fired oven, I liked Cili Pizza better but this pizza was good too.

Pelmeni XL: Heaps and heaps of Pelmeni

This is a quick place to grab lunch or dinner, there was almost always a line but it goes quick. This location is open very late, open 9am-4am.All the Pelmeni are the same price and weighed at the end, I think our total bill for 2 drinks and 2 bowls of pelmeni was around 2 lv ($4 US) and the drinks were most of the cost. Grab a bowl and fill it up with one or more varieties of pelmeni, dumplings filled with different meats (I think there was one vegetarian option as well). As I can't read Latvian, I just tried a few of each and all were good.There are several different sauces to try as well, I tried mayo and sour cream, heck the calorie count was already out the window!

Well, I think you have to see it. It is a very big restaurant, but self service. You can see how the food is made and choose what you want. There is a big choise of local food and other international food. Shashlik with fried potatoes and garlic sauce...mmmm

Lido: Serve for yourself

Have a special dinner in fairy-tale wonderland, the biggest log-house building not only in Latvia, but also in the whole Europe - national LIDO Relaxation Center. Taste a typical Latvian cuisine and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the LIDO restaurant. Although on the weekend it might be crowded of locals and tourists and a little bit difficult to find a free table.

A small artsy restaurant offering a lovely view of the St. Peter's church through "smart" tinted windows which make it a warm, sunny oasis for most of the day.Average meal price: 2-5 Ls, beer - 1 Ls. Vegetarian food and warm atmosphere.International food and good beer, including traditional Latvian beer.

Lido: The Biggest Riga's Lido!

It's the biggest three floors Lido with children playgrounds outside, pleasant and convienent places and brewery in the ground floor.Taste the honey beer!!! It's very nice! Different food from salads to the steaks, deserts and sweets ... and more more ... just make a choice. I liked the chicken on grill. Not dry and with some nice spice.

Wooden furniture, comfy sofas and warm colours make this basement bar a good spot to have a lunch in the Old Town - they offer cheap lunch deals and here cheap doesn't mean bad! Or order anything from the menu like Greek salad, streamed trout or pork chops. And you don't have to be an adept of helthy lifestyle to try one of their amazing "healthy cocktails". "Woc chicken" - tenderloins of chickens with prima souce. Capitally!
