Andalusiska Suns (Andalucian Dog)

I've put Diner, because it's diner style, pub oriented presentation. The atmosphere is really quite good, nice woody feel, with some TV to watch. Music of the more discerning sort. Beer is good. I was there twice when it was not so full, so it was relaxing too.Food quite good for the style of place it is. When I visited again (Jan 2003) the spaghetti was overcooked. I realised this place was not as good as I originally thought. I still recomend it for it's atmosphere though.

High class italian restaurant. Pizza are very good. Delicious cheese on them. The downside is that it's expensive. The wine was particularly heavily priced. Sohisticated atmosphere. Service can be hurried if you ve after 10, the waitresses are keen to go home soon after 11. Everything is authentic italian. Yes, balsamic vinegar is on all tables. If you have the money, treat yourself. Any pizza

Malibu Pizza

Hawaian style surroundings in this cheap pizza place with lots of young people. Comfortable seating. TVs and music. Relaxed. For the price, I would say it was good. I'm probably too old for it I think. It was nice anyway. Red Wine, I thought I would be OK with the Argentinian Malbec grape. It was too light. Very cheap (for a restaurant) though at under 6 lats.

The Garlic Tavern: Kiploku Krogs

Nice atmo, but the food was incredibly hard to digest! It also wasn't so nice. Apparently some Euro minister overseeing Latvia's integration into EU think this place is great. If you come here for the coffee perhaps! Mind you, I'm not enamoured of garlic.2,75 out of 5.

Charlestons

There are two parts to this place, an informal, cafeteria style front part, where you can still get substantial food (eg. lunch), and at the back, there is the more formal restaurant for dinners. I will say that the cafeteria was better. The good wine saved the dinner really. It could have been better. Charleston's needs to improve the food. At the moment, it's a bit mediocre. The "Chickerilla" with tagliatelli was fine. The Rioja Red Wine "El Coto" is quite good value at 9.50 lats the bottle (Jan 2003).

Top notch place. Smallish, but atmospheric. Somewhat mediterranean air to their food. A real treat anyhow. The "hot snacks" are actually quite substantial contrary to their name. Original cuisine, which means you mighn't be lucky always, but in general, it's quite good. Their Hot Balzams is a delicious hot drink with blackberry and lemon. Obligatory in winter! Well, last time I went, I had a "vegetable julien" which was 2 small pots of mushrooms with cheese. Quite nice, if not so big. They have plenty of other stuff to choose from.

This outlet of the Latvian chain has the best atmosphere because it's in the centre. Really I suppose it's for drinks only. I give it 4 points, though striclty it should be less. I'm a bit of a push over as a restaurant critic though.

Osiris (O-Series, get it?): BMW Cafe

Sorry about the title, MY little sick joke. This is a cafe really, but the food was good. Tables a bit too close together. I had this American who seemed to be some Model Spotter talking about how important he was to this nice looking woman. It was irritating the literal entrails of a low lying type like me. However, beer and food was good. 4/5!

Thank God It`s Friday!: The only Carribean restaurant and cocktail bar !

Riga`s a decent distance from the equator but some of the city`s barmen have bridged the gap with this Carribean coctail bar. The cuisine is international, but the wide selection of long drinks, the colorful surroundings and the close proximity to a body of water makes one dream of southern climes.@ The longest bar in a town@ Open 12:00 noon till the last customer@ Carribean go-go dancers on weekends@ Non stop meringue, bachata, salsa, reggae Carribean rolls with salmon or schrimps, fish plates and of course wonderful cocktails...In winter I prefare Hot Fidels and Lanbada as well as their specialties Mojito, Fruit Punch and Cuba Libre!

When all of Riga`s other bars shut their doors, people come here. Stroll down to the "Black Cat" and enjoy a good meal and a drink for a reasonable price. You can also try your hand at billiards, pinball, darts, air hockey, video games or slot machines Their pancakes are scrumptious, but that`s probably the 5am all-clubbed-out appetite talking... :))
