by Lilasel Attend any Latvian hockey match and you’ll undoubtedly see people wearing red and white-striped hats with furry brown ears. The ears in fact are one of Latvia’s most interesting symbols. Lachplesis (the bear slayer), hero of the epic poem of the same name, was the superhuman defender of the land from evil forces. Like all mythological protagonists he wasn’t all man in the sense that he had bear’s ears. Ironically he could kill bears with his bare hands not to mention Latvia’s enemies. On November 11, Latvians commemorate their fallen heroes who sacrificed life and limb to defend their nation. A sombre event, Lachplesis Day is marked by the lighting of candles in apartment windows and by Riga Castle. Leave a Comment

by Lilasel Riga is supposedly named after the Ridzene or river Riga that was filled in approximately one hundred years ago. It is still possible to trace the old riverbed along some streets in Vecriga (Old Riga), namely Valnu. The meaning of the word Riga is still disputed to this day and the fact that a similar word does not exist in the Latvian language further complicates things. Leave a Comment

Throughout this century, Jurmala has been Riga's playground, from the elegant days of the 1930s to the years of occupation. Jurmala was also the ultimate destination for the Soviet Union's elite retirees. It might cheer you up to know that the beaches at Majori and Bulduri have been awarded the coveted mark of any self respecting beach community worth its weight in tourist dollars, the prestigious Blue Flag. by FletteMette The first thing you should do when arriving in Riga, is to pick up a copy of the "In Your Pocket" city guide. It is available free of charge in the baggage claim area of Riga airport, and many hotels provide their guests with a free copy. You can also find it for sale in book stores, kiosks and at the tourist information centres - price 1.20 Ls. The guide comes in new editions several times a year, so you'll always get up-to-date and accurate information. However, I do find that some reviews tend to be overly positive - for instance the restaurant reviews - so do take the hotel and restaurant reviews with a tiny grain of salt, and of course always check with VT as well.. ;o) The "In Your Pocket" guides are covering 11 other Latvian cities, and numerous other destinations, mainly in Eastern Europe. These guides have all the information you'd expect to find in a bigger, more expensive, "proper" guide book - it's amazing how much info they've managed to cram into these little guides. In the Riga edition you'll find info on transport, hotels, restaurants, nightlife, shopping, sightseeing, events...all you need, really. The guides are also available online: www.inyourpocket.com Leave a Comment

The view from St.Peter's Church by Lilasel The highest point from where you can admire the panorama of Riga is the Television Tower (1 Zakusalas krastmala, tel. 710 86 43, 10.00 - 16.00, admission: 0.80Ls). In the Skyline Bar of the Reval Hotel Latvia (26th floor), 55 Elizabetes iela, 16.00 - 02.00, you can admire the view over the city in a comfortable way, enjoying your drink... On top of St. Peter’s church (19 Skarnu iela, tel. 722 94 26, ticket: 2 Ls) you can get a real good look at the Old Town rooftops. Leave a Comment

The Laima Clock by FletteMette The Laima Clock is situated on the edge of the Old Town - across the road from McDonalds, near the Freedom monument. If you arrange to meet someone in Riga, chances are that they'll suggest meeting by the Laima clock - which has been a popular meeting point ever since it was erected in 1924, and really is *the* meeting place in Riga. Laime means *happiness* or *luck* in Latvian (thank you, VTmember daugavpilietis, for correcting my spelling error;o). Laima is the goddess of faith in Latvian and Lithuanian mythology - and Laima is also the name of the biggest chocolate company in Latvia. You'll find Laima chocolates and sweets in any supermarket in Latvia, but there are also several Laima shops in Riga (and many other Latvian towns) - including one at Smilsu 8 (in the Old Town), one at the Central Railway Station, one at Marijas 16 and one at Merkela 13. by Vija_v It is not allowed to drink alcoholic drinks on the streets of Riga. If you will meet the policeman while holding open bottle you might be asked to pay the fee. Even it is only a bottle of beer. But again, if you really want to have a drink in the streets, you can try to do like the girls in the picture. ;) Leave a Comment

Art Nouveau buildings by HORSCHECK If you like Art Nouveau architecture (Jugendstil) , Riga is the place to go. Many centuries-old ornate buildings of the architect Mikahail Eisenstein survived in the Old Town of Riga (Vecriga). Among other streets, Art Nouveau buildings are concentrated in the streets around Elizabetes iela. Leave a Comment

New Riga with Hotel Latvija by HORSCHECK Outside the Old Town (Vecriga) and the park boulevard ring lies the so called New Riga. Among many business and residential buildings, it is also home to many interesting churches and parks. One of the main sights is the Russian Orthodox Alexandr Nevsky Church in the Esplanade Park at Brivibas iela, just in front of the Latvija Hotel. Leave a Comment

by Vija_v If you need some help don’t be afraid to ask locals, because people here are nice. The problem can be that not many people in here will understand you. Mostly just young persons are good in English, but others wont be able to communicate with you. That is also big problems in shops- it might happen that shop assistant just won’t understand what you want. Leave a Comment
