Bar Line: Stay Away from Strip Bars
gregexplorer profile photo

Foreigners are usually easy prey in Riga of local strippers or bar girls. So be aware and no to go with local girls to any new bars if you don't know the bar. Usually girls will take you to bar like BAR LINE or PINK PANTHER and there are several more like that where you become the victim of girls who usually work there and they pretend that never been there. So the girls order expensive drinks which might cost from 100 - 5000 euros and will cost you the fortune. So as a tip never order any drinks if you don't know how much they cost, secondly always ask for menu and then only order, always ask if there is a entrance charge in that pub or bar.

So friends, be little smart and not become the victims of local fraud girls.

Lidojosa Varde (Flying Frog) Bar 2007

The Flying Frog happened to be just a street away from where I was staying at the Albert and as I'd read of it I had to give it a try.

I gave it one drink and left.

Apparently known as being popular with ex-pats, it correspondingly has a reputation as being more expensive than average. It's in the heart of the Art Deco district, so maybe it picks up tourists. It certainly felt like somewhere that tourists would visit rather than locals and the night I was there, while overall it was fairly empty, there was a very loud group of middle aged Norwegians sitting opposite.

I can't comment on the quality of the food, but it seemed a little pricey given that this is really just a basement pub with a green gimmick. Wine or a warm glug/gluhwein cost around 3 / 3.50 lats and was very average. It stays open pretty late on most nights until about 3am.

Dress Code: There didn't seem to be any dresscode and judging by the fact one woman had her head placed firmly on the table in the worst state of drunken dissaray I've seen for some time, I don't think they turn people away in a hurry.

I suspect that if you're coming her with a bunch of mates then this could be good fun on a busy summer's night as they have a terrace to hang out on, but if you're looking for somewhere quiet or just local to hang out in, this isn't it.

The frog theme is carried along in slightly oppressive green walls that didn't work for me in a basement setting. And a great big fish tank that didn't seem to have any fish. But had a plastic frog.

On the plus side, if you have a family and need a break between photographs of Art Deco buildings during the day, then they do have a special childrens seating and play area and the food is so generic sounding that the kids will surely like it.

Riga by night is fascinating, especially when you get to see it from the 26th floor!!!

We had a lovely little VT meeting with ritaz there and without this suggestion we might not have experienced this fabulous nightlife spot. The service is fast and friendly, the cocktails excellent, the only drawback for me was that the music was way too loud! So unfortunately it was VERY difficult to have a decent conversation!

One nice thing was that totally unexpectedly we saw a most beautiful firework over the nicely illuminated city - wow, thank you Rita, that was not necessary, but absolutely spectacular!!! ;-)

The Skyline bar is open until 2 a.m., on Fridays and Saturdays until 3 a.m.

I was in love!!!

If you are interested in experiencing the cutting edge of Riga's nightlife then you must gain the inside information from an Out-There.eu guide in a Bar & Club briefing. With the help of a Riga nightlife information pack, they will tell you where is hot and where is not!

They will give you your Bar & Club Briefing on arrival during your airport transfer or meet you at your hotel reception before embarking on an Out-There.eu activity. Therefore, you can begin to gain knowledge of the many fantastic night spots as soon as you arrive in Riga. The Riga map clearly indicates where the nightclubs and bars are located in Riga. So, all you have to do is concentrate on partying hard and sampling the best of Latvia's vibrant club scene.

To be entitled to Bar & Club Briefing you need to have booked an Out-There.eu activitiy or service.

Sky bar, Latvija Hotel: Amazing views from Sky Bar

View from atop towards the Old Town

The Sky Bar atop the Hotel Latvija is the place to go for a drink, at least. I am not much of a bar crawler (as witnessed by my lack of bar tips at any destination...) but this is the one place I really like to go to. Not much of an alcohol drinker I appreciate their great non-alcoholic drinks and my husband enjoys the beer and other that they serve.

This is an expensive place and very popular too, so do get rather early, at least before 10 pm if you fancy sitting down while sipping your hot or cold drink.

If you have a fear of heights, getting up here might not be such a good idea as the windows cover the whole wall, even in the ladies toilet! Also, just getting up might be an ordeal. There is a panoramic lift to take you up there, but there is the usual covered type there too if you can't handle the panoramic ride.

The hotel itself is on the expensive side and has been around for a long long time. It's a nice place to stay, I hear, if your're not on a tight budget.

Dress Code: This used to be a place to get dressed up for, but the dress code is not too strict so smart casual will be fine.

Invitation to Club Essential

Every night, the hostel I stayed in offered clubbing tours for the guests. Every night, a different club is offered. And one night, there was Club Essential...

I can’t say a lot about this club, just one thing: They didn’t let me in. Why? They didn’t like my shoes. For more information about not wearing differently coloured shoes, just read my travellogue. If you want to go there anyway, I just have to say that you have to deal with an unfriendly bouncer… Try another club instead.

Dress Code: Surely no shoes of two different colours...

One of the best clubs i've been to around the world. There were about six or seven different rooms, playing all different music. The entrance area had a cloakroom and general chill-out area. The next room downstairs was an R&B area with a good sized bar. At the back of the club was a very large trance room (possibly the worst photo i've ever taken) with many people, including myself, shape-throwing. Upstairs as well as another bar was a salsa/latin room which was very popular with the women.

Dress Code: Smart

Cetri balti krekli: Like something really Latvian? Join famous locals!

This interesting place is a mixture of many kind of places; meaning that you can have your lunch or dinner here, and later in the evening you can come to this combination of a disco, bar and nightclub.

There is a small entrance fee in the evenings. (2-5 Latis in 2001).

Named after a famous song of the same title (in English "Four white shirts"), this club is the place to go for patriotic or simply nostalgic locals as 90% of the music that is played is Latvian (very nice rock and pop music).

Riga's elite poets and politicians can often be spotted under the brick vaulted ceiling dancing to songs which inspired a proud nation to sing its way to freedom.

Dress Code: No dress code.
