I was very happy having guide named "Riga this week", you can take it somewhere in Riga old town for free, or, lets say, in bus station, airplane station. Another good choise is "Riga in your pocket", but this one cost about 1,5 euro.

  • Latvia is one of those countries which are having all 4 seasons.
It is very cold and windy in winter, hot - in summer time, enough rainy over autumn and spring.
So make sure what is the weather in here before plan your trip, so you would have all suitable clothes.

If you're going to Riga in winter, make sure to bring along warm, windproof clothes - the Baltic winter is usually quite windy and fairly cold. Perhaps a good idea to supplement your gear with a pair of lovely hand-knitted woolen mittens or gloves, which are sold in many shops and stalls in the Old Town.

The streets of Riga's Old Town are cobbled and quite uneven, and you'll probably spend quite some time wandering around - so bring comfortable shoes that are good for walking, the high heels are probably best left at home...;o)

If you forget something at home, I'm sure you'll quickly and easily find replacements here - there are many large shopping centres and department stores in Riga, and even though prices aren't particularly low you'll probably find whatever it is you need.

A backpack is good to bring along if you buy anything so you dont have to carry it.

Comfortable shoes is a must if your planing to visit Old town, the roads are not so comfortable to walk on.

Bring an extra battery for your camera your gona need it, there´s alot to take pictures of.

The tourist magazine "Riga This Week" is published 8 times a year. It is available free of charge at the Tourist Information Bureaus and many other places all around the town. The magazine provides information on what to do and where to go in Riga. Moreover it includes an event calendar and various city maps.

The Baltic States are rapidly developing countries, therefore an up to date guidebook is very useful. I used the Lonely Planet Guide "Estonia, Latvia & Lithuania" which offers information for all budgets on what to see and do, and tips on dining and accomodation.

    If travelling in winter!

  • Take a thick coat, and a hat - it can be quite windy when there is a snowstorm and the windchill factor will play a considerable role, especailly if you head out to Jurmala. Whilst your hotel might be gloriously warm it won't be outside! Gloves are an essential and insulated (GoreTex lined) boots are adviseable.

Take moisturising cream to prevent your lips from becoming dry and chapped.

Be sure to take plenty of batteries with you and be careful about your camera - in February when the temperatures are low you might find that your camera's performance is affected. I found that batteries didn't hold their charge as well in winter.

  • I visited at the end of October and it did get very cold. Most nights the temperature was below freezing.
Take lots of warm clothes and wrap up well in layers.
Don't worry, everyone (even the locals) do the same and there are plenty of places in bars adn restaurants to leave all your bulky coats etc.
