Enjoy the shashlik by Inguuna The restaurant’s atmosphere here is very interesting, some things reminded me something from Russian mentality. But all in all it surprised me a lot, I liked everything. You can’t see many tables closely together when entering in, because they are separated with not so small fence, so you can enjoy your company. Never saw this: we sat at the table where was only one menu. So my friend who is woman took that menu. At that time came waitress and took away menu and gave it to her man. Why so? In these menus which are given to women there aren’t prices, but in those which are given to men are! Good :) This place is very famous for shashliks, especially mutton shashlik. So me and my friends took different to taste all of them. My friends took mutton and pork shashliks, I took veal shashlik. They were very tasteful, but I can only mark that mutton was the best.
As I said, I took veal shashlik, it was very good. But tasting also mutton shashlik I can only say, that this was very, very good. If you're coming here I recommend to taste it, also enjoying wine. Prices: Pork shashlik - 6 Ls Veal shashlik - 7 Ls Mutton shashlik - 8 Ls Leave a Comment Theme: OtherPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: 15 Miera str.Phone: 7373445Directions: The place isn't far from Brīvības and Miera corner. Update: Lotoss has closed down! Another Indian Raja restaurant has opened here instead. Lotoss (Lotus) is situated right next to St. Peter's Church - get a table by the large tinted-glass windows and you'll have a beautiful view of the church and Skarnu street. The restaurant is quite small, with a lovely, cosy interior. The menu is pretty extensive, including everything from sandwiches to main courses and some very tempting desserts - and there are quite a few vegetarian dishes to choose from. My friend had the grilled Norwegian salmon with roasted potatoes, and was very satisfied with his meal - the vegetarian dish I chose was rather bland, though. Prices are perhaps a little higher than average - expect to pay around 5-7 Ls for most main courses. Opening hours: 11 - 23, except Fridays & Saturdays when it's open 11 - 24. Double Coffee is a very popular chain of coffee shops, you'll find outlets in numerous locations all over Riga, including at least 5 in the Old Town. In addition to the over 50 varieties of coffee and coffee drinks, the menu includes teas, juices, milk shakes, cocktails - and a much larger selection of foods than you'd expect from a coffee shop. Double Coffee offers soups, pancakes (both sweet and savoury - the ones I've tried weren't particularly tasty though), as well as various salads and sandwiches, and quite a few other light dishes. Then there's of course a number of cakes and desserts to tempt you...and absurdly rich hot chocolate, which comes in a tiny cup and really is nothing but melted, dark chocolate... :o) There's also a special breakfast menu, with toast, porridges and all kinds of egg varieties. But be warned: Don't go to Double Coffee if you're in a hurry, service is often *excruciatingly* slow..! (even for Riga, where service tends to be veeeeeery slow!!!) Also, don't be surprised if the food you get don't even remotely resemble what you ordered - I've for example ordered "multigrain toast" and ended up with soggy white untoasted bread (!) - service here can be *very* poor (again, even for Riga - where service generally is far from great!!) Menus in English are available only at the Double Coffee's located in the Old Town area - but the menu has photos of each dish, so you'll have some idea of what you're ordering...;o) Some of Double Coffee's locations in Riga include: Stabu iela 15 Valnu iela 11 (in the north-eastern part of the Old Town) Grecinieku iela 11 (near St. Peter's Church) Skunu iela 15 (near Dome Square) Terbatas iela 5 Raina bulv. 25 Leave a Comment

This is a chain of restaurants offering mainly pizza & pasta dishes, found on a couple of locations in Riga. The name Vairak Saules means "More sun" - and the interior does seem pretty sunny, with bright yellow colours - exactly what you need on a wintery day in Riga... ;o) On the menu you'll find several salads, soups, a large selection of pizzas and pastas, and various other main courses, including some that are suitable for vegetarians. The thin-crust pizzas are only ok-ish, I find them to be *way* too greasy. Expect to pay ca 3,50 Ls for a 30 cm pizza, and about 5 Ls for a main course with fish or meat. (But if you want pizza, and you're in the Old Town - why not go across the street from Vairak Saules and a few metres down Vecpilsetas street to Pomodoro instead - *much* better pizza and about the same price... :o) Found on Audeju 8, in the south-eastern part of the Old Town, near St. Peter's Church. Also on Dzirnavu 60, and in Domina Shopping Centre. Leave a Comment Theme: PizzaComparison: about average

I think this is the place where Latvians like and love to eat. There are always lot of people whether it's working day or weekend, but don't worry free table you can get easy, it's large three floor complex. Like in almost every "Lido" here is self-service, so you can take what you see. But I must warn you, with eyes you can eat more than you really can :). Cuisine is very good, and choosing food you can watch how it's prepared. There are wide choice of meat dish, various meat - chicken, pork, beef, than for vegetarians there are fishes. If you don't want to eat so much, than take pancakes or salads (salad bar here is also good), or some kind of desert. For drinks - here are wide choice of hot drinks, beer and natural juices. During summer you can eat outside on fresh air, but it's also good inside. On the first floor there is almost always live Latvian music. After good eating activities, go outside and see activities there. Despite that mostly of them are for children, you can skate and ride bull here.
Chicken soup. Roast chicken with rices or home fries. Stewed sauerkraut with home fries. Pancakes with filling. The restaurant called 1739 is in a lovely building right next to St. Peter's Church. The restaurant is intimate and romantic, with a small non-smoking section. The menu is quite extensive, with various pasta dishes, soups, fish & meat main courses - there are also some Latvian options on the mainly Italian menu. Between noon and 18 there's a separate lunch menu. Vegetarians will find a couple of dishes to choose from. So, that's the positive things I'll say about this place - now over to the bad news. There were hardly any guests in the restaurant when we were there, but the service was still *unbelievably* slow and not very friendly - in fact slightly rude. We had gnocchi, and the "Roman beef" - the servings were tiny, but that didn't really matter since the food was pretty much horrible. The overcooked gnocchi could hardly be recognised as gnocchi, they resembled some strange porridge - and the *very* far from tender beef was served with extraordinarily greasy french fries (and nothing else - no vegetables or salad) I've read some really good reviews of this restaurant, and I don't know what's happened to the place - perhaps the usual chef was away on holiday when we visited, or the quality of 1739 must have slipped quite significantly. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone - there are lots of restaurants in the Old Town, go somewhere else! This Italian restaurant is a 15-20 mins walk to the east of the Old Town (or a 2-3 Ls taxi ride from the Old Town area). It is definitely worth the hike though - I've been here several times, and the food was just great! The menu is quite extensive - there's a varied selection of appetizers, salads, soups, meat & fish dishes, pastas, pizzas... and some very tempting desserts. There are even lots of vegetarian options available, quite rare for a Riga restaurant! You'll have a pretty large selection of wines to choose from - all Italian. Get a table upstairs, and you'll have a view of some of the chefs & the pizza production... :o) We've tried the pizzas (thin crust, baked in a wood-fired oven - delicious, undoubtedly the best pizza we've had in Riga!), and various appetizers & pastas (all good!). I've had the penne all'arrabbiata twice, and it was perfect - nice & spicy... :o) The home-baked bread is yummy too, it was still warm from the oven. Delicious food, friendly service - so far my favourite Riga restaurant! Open 11-23. by bijo69 Xl Pelmeni is a local fast food chain specializing in...pelmeni. Pelmeni are dumplings with different kinds of fillings, like meat, mushrooms, veggies etc. You serve yourself and you pay your food by weight. Apart from pelmeni the restaurants also offers soup, salads and desserts. Prices are inexpensive and the pelmeni are quite yummy! Leave a Comment

Yes, this little café / bar does have a rather ridiculous name, but the place really is both stylish and cosy. You'll find I Love You in the northern part of the Old Town, near the Swedish Gate. I really liked the interior here - wooden floors, exposed brick walls, dark wooden furniture. There's a separate non-smoking section (walk through the first room to the bar, then turn left). Sofas downstairs. They have a quite nice breakfast menu (served until noon), as well as sandwiches, snacks and a few main courses. Not a whole lot to choose from for vegetarians, but there are *some* veggie dishes. Their sandwiches are quite ok, nothing special - and the freshly squeezed orange juice is always nice. I Love You has a pretty good drinks list - lots of cocktails (but no Strawberry Daiquiri, so the Mojito had to do;o) A great little place - mainly for drinks, but also for something light to eat. Quite interesting decor at Ai Karamba...:o)) by FletteMette, 3 more photos Update: Ai Karamba has closed down, and a restaurant called KID (which seems to be the total opposite of Ai Karamba!) has opened up in this location I've never been to a 1950's American diner, but Ai Karamba is probably the closest you'll get to one in Riga... :o) Ai Karamba is *not* in the old town, but it's only a 10-15 minute walk away. Ai Karamba has a pretty large breakfast menu, and lots of sandwiches, omelettes, salads, crepes, pies and some desserts - there's also a quite large selection of main courses available, ranging from blood sausage with cowberry sauce, to a veggie stew. I've only had breakfast & lunch here, but according to my friends the main courses aren't all that good. You'll find the menu on their web site. Ai Karamba also has a quite extensive selection of cocktails, wines & liquors if you need a drink before heading back to the old town... :o) The place is decorated in bright red colours, and the walls are covered with old license plates & signs - quite cool, somewhat kitschy... :o) It's a quite popular place, which can be pretty crowded (this puzzles me a bit - the food is certainly passable, but nothing special). Service is fairly quick and efficient. Opening hours: Monday - Thursday 08 - 24 Friday - Saturday: 08 - 01 Sunday: 10 - 24 How to get here: From Bastion Hill, walk across the foot bridge over the canal (notice the padlocks, see my local customs - tip:o) - walk through the park, onto Raina bulv. Walk north on Raina, cross K. Valdemara iela and continue north along the park, on Kalpaka bulv. (As you walk along Kalpaka, wave at me if I'm in Riga, I might be looking at you from the office window;o) At the end of Kalpaka you'll see a Double Coffee restaurant - walk past it and you're in Pulkveza Brieza. Ai Karamba is on your right. Leave a Comment
