I have eaten in most upscale restaurants in Riga, but by far the Bellevue Restaurant on the 11th floor of the Maritim Park Hotel offers the best value for money, the best choice of dishes and wines, certainly the best view over the Old city and the park of Riga.
The menu boasts an excellent choice of international gourmet dishes at very reasonable prices. With some dishes it is a pity eating them as the presentation of the dish looks like a work of art, take a picture of it before you start eating it, I recommend the Tuna Carpaccio, it really looks like a modern painting.
The food is just excellent, presentation, taste. This Restaurant can easily compete with the best in the world.
Service is professional and kind. No pressure whatsoever ! the pricing of the menu is very compatible, certainly cheaper then some other "upscale" restaurant is Riga. As well as the wines are moderately prices.
The view is just stunningly beautiful, one looks out over the city of Riga, the river Daugava and the park, right in front of the hotel.
Whenever in Riga, I will certainly return to this restaurant as it is a "gastronomic experience" !!
Favorite Dish: The Tuna Carpaccio is definitely a must, just to look at the presentation is a joy. The deer saddle is just exquisite !!
I cannot define what specifically one should choose, as everything on the menu is just excellent.

It's an unusual mix of Italian and International food, like Japanese, although thankfully not in the same dish. I can't vouch for the other food, but the pizza was excellent. They serve up all kinds of things pasta and pizza related, and sushi and items from the "Bahamaian Kitchen", whatever they were. It doesn't make any sense, but it's nicely designed, popular, tasty and with fast, friendly service.
It's all part of a large restaurant chain that owns many, often very well regarded, restaurants across Riga. All of them are a bit off-beat, like the Dada Mongolian Restaurant, with a mix of Taiwanese style Mongolian buffet and post modern furniture. I didn't get a chance to check that place out, but apparently it's very good too.

Excellent Italian food with an interesting clientelle, at least when I was there. I spent a good lunch listening a French and an American woman talking about jewellery, from the history of silver making in Mexico, to the special market in Budapest. They seemed like regulars too, and enjoyed their meal as much as we did.
In the evenings the place is quite expensive, but they have a very reasonable, if thinned down, lunchtime menu which is definitely worth checking out. Food takes a respectably long time to reach your table, because it's properly cooked.
I think it's called 1739 because that's when the place was built. It's a very old building.

Indian food in the Baltics sounds about as likely as snow in the Sahara, but it works. In fact it more than works, it's excellent, putting many English restaurants to shame. Despite the friendly waitress being as blonde as a Latvian can be, I spied Indians in the kitchen, and the food tasted fresh and authentic.
You won't find any surprises on the menu as it seems geared to the English tourists that descend on the city, but you get an English language menu because of that too. Get there early to avoid the drunks who'll probably come later.
There was another Indian Raj near St. Peter's. I'm not sure if this was a sister restaurant, or just a rip-off place trading on the reputation of the older restuarant. This review is for the restaurant on Vecpilsetas.

I have eaten at this restaurant sevral times on my trips to Riga and always leave very happy and full of yummy goodness!! It has a perfect atmosphere which is relaxed and warm. The service is excellent for Riga and the staff very friendly and most speak good english too.
The main meals are all delicious and a decent size for about 6LVL each. The mushroom soup is one of the best I have tried and makes me want one just writing about it, so good!!
My favourite dish there is the Sheppards Feast which is a main meal... Beef with a delicious sauce that I cant work out served with your choice of veggies, rice or fries.
A small selection of deserts is available but Im all about the main meals at this place they are all so delicious. I have recommended this place to many people and most come back with positive reviews.
You have to check it out.

There are many outdoors restaurants in the old town of Riga. I tried some of them and was very satisfied with the quality of the food. However it is more expensive to eat in the old town than the rest of Riga. I noticed all the foreign tourists sitting around me. The main languages by the guests were German and Scandinavian. Where are the Latvians? Maybe high prices in the outdoors restaurants scares them away? Sitting here didn't give me a sense of Latvia.

A wooden entrance...
There is darkness inside and a woman medieval dressed looks at me. I ask her if restaurant is open; low voice, gentle hands movement, she indicates me and my friends to go downstairs...
...ten seconds later and we are in the medieval.

Despite being brand new, it's a very well run place. Fabulous decor and excellent food. Reasonably priced given the quality. Filet of beef with foie gras mousse 13 Ls. Offered Champagne by glass (5.5 Ls). Lots of seafood and fish in the menu.
Favorite Dish: The red king crab legs baked in Provençe butter. The crab legs are steamed with a mildly spicy seasoning and have a satisfying texture.

The best restaurant I have visited in Latvia is Lido.
It is a buffet style, i.e you walk around and choose food you like.
Situated not so far from down town.
Favorite Dish: We had smoked pork ribs, smoked minoga (it is a local small long river fish looks like eel), pork's ears and many many other tasty things!
Advice to everybody!

One of the most unusual restaurants in Riga, or for that matter Europe is this one in Riga. It bills itself as 'The Garlic restaurant' and it certainly lives up to it's name. Absolutely everything on the menu, and I mean everything, has garlic as a component somewhere.
We selected the garlic platter as a starter which gave a good range of differing tastes that tried to ingloriously compete with the garlic overload. They failed. The star of the platter had to be the whole roasted garlics bulbs. I must confess I forget what main course I ordered, but I remember that all our of us were quite satisfied. The sweet was however the thing that really stuck in the mind - garlic ice-cream. Now this is a dish that just sounds awful in principle, goes against any convention of culinary flavour combinations - and yet somehow it worked.
I would highly recommend the restaurant, as long as you like garlic and don't mind knocking out everyone within 7 feet of you with you pungent garlic breath for the next fortnight.
It's also said by some that garlic is an aphrodisiac. No Comment.
