Cau, rasma!: Cheap and affordable

The restaurant is down some stairs from the entrance at ground level. Don't be put off by the fact that you have to pay a small cover charge (LVL 0.60) to enter - this is for the live music that is on (if you go during the evening).

The food is typically Latvian and there are also menus available in German and English. Portions tend to be very much towards the large end of things - and are very cheap - a main course is often no more than about LVL2-3.

Local music groups play a mixture of Latvian and international music - we heard Beatles songs and Latvian rock when we were there. It seems to be a place where locals go to have fun at the end of the week - there were a lot of large tables there and later on, a lot of people were getting up and starting dancing.

Favorite Dish: I enjoyed some great black pudding with red cabbage here - and it was washed down with some very agreeable beer.

LIDO

it's more than a restaurant, it's almost 3 restaurants, one of them called "Beer Basement", because all food is served with local beer.
it looks like a windmill and it's an unique type of wooden building, interiors are all decorated and very nice to look.
outside is even better...huge place where kids can really hv lot of fun...it's perfect for a family with kids but also for who wants to enjoy the local food.

Well, its too expensive and the interior makes you feel like you're in England, but if you like it. ...however the toilette for men is just georgeous, have a look for yourself, and see why I liked it.

Čili pica: Good pizza

In some way these pizzas differ from those in Pizza Jazz, but they also are very tasty. The menu is quite large, so you can choose various pizzas and besides them here are also salads and delicious other food. The pizzas here are a little bit fat.
I liked here hot drinks, but didn't like desserts.
The service is rather good, so they serve food very fast.
The best atmosphere is at Colonnade, near Laima clock and on Stockmann center.

Favorite Dish: Calzone, Delicioza, Lambada, Chicken pie with king boletus

Trattoria del Popolo: Excellent italian style trattoria

Went there 3 times, both for lunch and dinner, during my 5 day stay in Riga. The food was excellent from starters, home made pastas, soups (try chiopino soup) to main courses and desserts, and affordable, the atmosphere - great, as you expect from an Italian restaurant, service - professional but maybe too much unobtrusive, for an Italian place:-) think my best dining experience during my trip to Latvia and Estonia.

Favorite Dish: Chiopino soup - tomato soup with seafood.
Tagliatelle with salmon fillet and seafood
Sea Bass with mashed potato spinach

Bellevue Restaurant in the Maritim Park Hotel: The best kept secret in town

I have eaten in most upscale restaurants in Riga, but by far the Bellevue Restaurant on the 11th floor of the Maritim Park Hotel offers the best value for money, the best choice of dishes and wines, certainly the best view over the Old city and the park of Riga.
The menu boasts an excellent choice of international gourmet dishes at very reasonable prices. With some dishes it is a pity eating them as the presentation of the dish looks like a work of art, take a picture of it before you start eating it, I recommend the Tuna Carpaccio, it really looks like a modern painting.
The food is just excellent, presentation, taste. This Restaurant can easily compete with the best in the world.
Service is professional and kind. No pressure whatsoever ! the pricing of the menu is very compatible, certainly cheaper then some other "upscale" restaurant is Riga. As well as the wines are moderately prices.
The view is just stunningly beautiful, one looks out over the city of Riga, the river Daugava and the park, right in front of the hotel.
Whenever in Riga, I will certainly return to this restaurant as it is a "gastronomic experience" !!

Favorite Dish: The Tuna Carpaccio is definitely a must, just to look at the presentation is a joy. The deer saddle is just exquisite !!
I cannot define what specifically one should choose, as everything on the menu is just excellent.

Macaroni Noodle Bar: Old Town: Italian and International

Macaroni Noodle Bar, Riga

It's an unusual mix of Italian and International food, like Japanese, although thankfully not in the same dish. I can't vouch for the other food, but the pizza was excellent. They serve up all kinds of things pasta and pizza related, and sushi and items from the "Bahamaian Kitchen", whatever they were. It doesn't make any sense, but it's nicely designed, popular, tasty and with fast, friendly service.

It's all part of a large restaurant chain that owns many, often very well regarded, restaurants across Riga. All of them are a bit off-beat, like the Dada Mongolian Restaurant, with a mix of Taiwanese style Mongolian buffet and post modern furniture. I didn't get a chance to check that place out, but apparently it's very good too.

Oskar eating at 1739, Riga

Excellent Italian food with an interesting clientelle, at least when I was there. I spent a good lunch listening a French and an American woman talking about jewellery, from the history of silver making in Mexico, to the special market in Budapest. They seemed like regulars too, and enjoyed their meal as much as we did.

In the evenings the place is quite expensive, but they have a very reasonable, if thinned down, lunchtime menu which is definitely worth checking out. Food takes a respectably long time to reach your table, because it's properly cooked.

I think it's called 1739 because that's when the place was built. It's a very old building.

Indian Raja: Old Town: Indian
antistar profile photo

Indian food in the Baltics sounds about as likely as snow in the Sahara, but it works. In fact it more than works, it's excellent, putting many English restaurants to shame. Despite the friendly waitress being as blonde as a Latvian can be, I spied Indians in the kitchen, and the food tasted fresh and authentic.

You won't find any surprises on the menu as it seems geared to the English tourists that descend on the city, but you get an English language menu because of that too. Get there early to avoid the drunks who'll probably come later.

There was another Indian Raj near St. Peter's. I'm not sure if this was a sister restaurant, or just a rip-off place trading on the reputation of the older restuarant. This review is for the restaurant on Vecpilsetas.

I have eaten at this restaurant sevral times on my trips to Riga and always leave very happy and full of yummy goodness!! It has a perfect atmosphere which is relaxed and warm. The service is excellent for Riga and the staff very friendly and most speak good english too.

The main meals are all delicious and a decent size for about 6LVL each. The mushroom soup is one of the best I have tried and makes me want one just writing about it, so good!!

My favourite dish there is the Sheppards Feast which is a main meal... Beef with a delicious sauce that I cant work out served with your choice of veggies, rice or fries.

A small selection of deserts is available but Im all about the main meals at this place they are all so delicious. I have recommended this place to many people and most come back with positive reviews.

You have to check it out.
