Riga Old Town by FletteMette Riga airport is situated ca 10 km south-west of the city centre. Transport between the airport and the city centre is fairly quick and easy, by bus or taxi. The taxi ride will usually take ca 15-20 minutes, and cost ca 6 - 8 Ls (never more than 10 Ls!), depending on the traffic. (If the traffic is *very* heavy the taxi ride might take as long as almost an hour - but that is an exception!) Read my taxi tip for more information about taxis in Riga...! Bus no 22 and 22a (express) leaves every 10 - 30 minutes for the city centre, the journey between the airport and the centre normally takes ca 30 minutes and costs ca 0.40 Ls. (ca 20 mins - 0.50 Ls for the express bus) More information about the buses, including a list of all the bus stops (lidosta = airport...:o), here: www.rigassatiksme.lv Leave a Comment

by bijo69 Riga's airport is situated about 10km from the city centre. These days it is served by budget airlines like easyjet (my choice from Berlin SXF) and Ryanair. The local carrier Air Baltic has competitive fares aswell, especially from Eastern Europe. The terminals look like they've been renovated recently and are quite modern. You can get to/from the airport on bus 22 (from/to the train/bus stastion) for 0,20 LVL and on bus 22a (from/to the Orthodox Cathedral) for 0,25 LVL. Leave a Comment

by FletteMette Riga airport (RIX) is situated ca 10 km southwest of the city centre. It is a quite small, but modern and fairly efficient airport. There are long queues at check-in at times, so it is advisable to be at the airport at least 1 - 1 1/2 hours before departure. There are a few small cafes, and also a Lido restaurant at the airport - the Lido restaurants are very well-known in Riga, this popular chain of buffet-style restaurants offers a wide selection of Latvian food at reasonable prices. (The Lido restaurant is located in the public area of the airport - *before* you go through security into the departure lounge) There are ATMs, banks (open 9 - 17) and a currency exchange office available at the airport. Various car rental companies have offices here (including Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar...) There's also a tourist information office, open between 07 and 01, where you can book hotels etc. The tax free shops at Riga airport aren't terribly impressive, but you *will* find the most usual brands of cigarettes, alcohol etc. Be aware that one of the shops (the one closest to the security / passport control at the entrance) does *not* accept credit cards. (!) For information about transport to and from the airport, see separate tip... :o) Leave a Comment

Riga can easily be reached by plane - and the good part is that some budget airlines fly there as well. We took a Ryanair flight from Frankfurt/Hahn to Riga, which took about 2 1/2 hours. Apart from Ryanair there is also Easyjet or Air Baltic that have some good bargains to get to and from Germany, so do check it out. Here is a link to some of the bargains. Leave a Comment

I booked a flight with Ryanair and paid only 25 euros, which was the airport tax. Many people have prejudices against Ryanair and I think that for many people who live in Helsinki it is a big step to fly from Tampere! Anyway I use them whenever it is possible. The flight was smooth and though it left late due to the weather conditions we were not too late in arriving in Riga. From Finland you can also take a ferry to Tallinn and continue by bus from there and in summers there are cruises to Riga as well. Leave a Comment

by FletteMette Air Baltic is the Latvian national airline, based in Riga. Air Baltic has flights to around 50 European destinations from Riga, 20 from the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. Their ticket prices are often quite competitive, and Air Baltic is definitely worth checking out if you're planning a trip to the Baltics. They're in close cooperation with SAS - Scandinavian, which owns almost 50% of the company. Air Baltic is a low-cost carrier, so you won't get any "free" food or drinks - but a (very) limited selection of overpriced snacks and food is available for sale on board. Only Euro and Lats are accepted - which might be a problem if you're flying from countries outside the Euro-zone! I have travelled with Air Baltic quite a few times, and find this airline to be reliable and ok(ish) - even though service isn't excellent, and the staff can be somewhat surly! One thing though: when booking tickets online, it happens *very* frequently that the ticket price increases during the booking process. Hmmmm...! Be aware that there are often *very* long queues at check-in at Riga airport - so I would recommend you to be at the airport at least 1 1/2 hours before departure (Air Baltic's check-in deadline at Riga airport is 60 minutes) I flew from Riga this morning, and the queue must have been at least...70? metres long! It "only" took around half an hour to get to the check-in counter, though. Another option is to check in online (then you'll only have to drop off your luggage at a counter which *much* shorter queues - online check-in doesn't always work, though - I've got error messages probably around 50% of the times I've tried.) From Riga airport there is a bus (number 22) every 20 minutes to the city centre. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the city centre and most impressively will only cost you 0.30lat. You pay this on board to one of the ticket ladies. Theme: Airplane

We flew to Riga from Tampere with Ryanair, which one of the few budget airlines operating also from Finland. If you're lucky you may get your return tickets for as little as 40 euros, which is really cheap. We didn't get our tickets quite that cheap, but got a very nice price still. I must admit we had some doubts about using a budget airline but everything went well. We were even ahead of schedule both ways and I hear this is pretty common. With their affordable prices, we'll surely use them again. I just wish they would have direct flights to more destinations from Finland. Leave a Comment

minibus by Leipzig The public transport system operates daily from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm. One of the fastes ways to get around is by minibus. Tickets can be purchased from the driver and cost 20 Santimes (~0.30€). You can find minibus terminals next to the Central Station and the Main Post office. Minibuses stop only if you raise your hand. Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Riga airport by sannaeh Ryan Air flies to Riga from Tampere, Finland for a very reasonable price. Even very close to Christmas we managed to get our one way tickets for only 15 euros per person, including taxes. As for getting to and from the airport, don't take the Ryanair bus from the railway station in Tampere. Instead take one of the local buses and you pay half the price (only 3 euros). In Riga's end the bus ticket cost was so minimal that you can jump to any bus at all. Actually we didn't pay anything in Riga as they didn't want to take notes in the bus. If you're travelling around Scandinavia, this is a very cheap and convenient way to get back to the mainland Europe. No hassle with ferries. Leave a Comment
