The sweet scent as you enter any of the Emihls Gustavs Shokolahde shops in Riga is unbelievably promising, and you won't be disappointed when you try the delicious chocolates that are made here..! This is both a cafe and a chocolate shop - enjoy a piece or three on the premises, or have some chocolate gift-wrapped - the perfect present or souvenir! (My mum will agree with that, I think she was more happy about the coffee-flavoured chocolate, than the linen tablecloth I got her... ;o) A huge selection of chocolate pieces available, price: 2 Ls for 100 grams. There are a couple of Emihls Gustavs Shokolahde outlets in Riga - including one in the new Galerija centre in the Old Town, in Berga Bazars, and at Centrs and Domina shopping centres. (Emihls Gustavs was formerly known as Emihla Gustava, for some reason the old company name has been "adjusted", and is now promoted as Emihls Gustavs abroad, as the owner's are looking to conquer the world;o) Update Jan 2008: There used to be a Emihls Gustavs shop on Tirgonu iela in the old town, but that one appears to have been closed. Riga Christmas Market is arranged on Dome Square (right next to the Dome Cathedral) every year in December. Around fifty stalls decorated with lights surround a large Christmas Tree - a lovely place to stroll around whilst chatting to Santa & sipping mulled wine...;o) Various Latvian handicrafts are for sale - you'll find knitted wool sweaters, socks & mittens, linen tablecloths, beeswax candles, baskets, leather products, wooden toys and a quite large selction of other souvenirs & gifts, as well as local food and the beforementioned mulled wine... :o) You'll find most of the products for sale in the ordinary Old Town souvenir shops as well, but the atmosphere of the market is great, and a visit is highly recommended. Oh, and did I mention there is mulled wine...?;o) The market is open from 10 - 20 every day. Leave a Comment Theme: Local CraftAddress: Dome Square

Jana Seta by FletteMette The Jana Seta shop, located next to Berga Bazars on Elizabetes iela, is Latvia's largest specialist store selling travel books and maps. Jana Seta is a map publishing company, and this is *the* place to look for maps of the region. Jana Seta has a decent selection of the usual travel guides, such as Lonely Planet, Eyewitness, etc - and of course a huge selection of maps. You'll also find the In Your Pocket guide to Riga, Tallinn and several other Baltic cities - the In Your Pocket guides are highly recommended, and a bargain at Ls 1,20. (Read more about these guides in my *general tip*) Opening hours: Monday - Friday 10 -19 Saturday 10 -17 Sunday closed Leave a Comment

Lots of fairs and markets are held in the Old Town of Riga every year - among them is the annual Harvest Fair. In 2006 the fair took place on the last Saturday in September, check with the event guide on www.virtualriga.com for more information. There are lots of stalls both on the Dome Square and on the Town Hall Square outside the House of the Brotherhood of Blackheads. A variety of products are on offer: arts and crafts such as knitted sweaters, socks and mittens, ceramics, linen tablecloths, handmade candles, woven baskets, leather and wood products - in addition to honey, cakes, fruits, vegetables... There are also stalls selling hot meals. Folk dancers and singers perform, and there are games for the children (and adults too;o). Melisa, tricia, & Gabriel shopping for souvenirs by niamey00 Several of the old buildings in the ethnographic museum have shops selling tradition crafts. Near the entrance, this shop sells linen and knitted wool items. The quality is good, and the prices are a bit lower than what you would pay in Old Town. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

by niamey00 There are many street vendors in Old Town selling amber, knitted goods, matryushkas, and old Soviet medals and such. You can find to vendors on Kalku iela, off Livu Square, and around St. Peters Church
Amber, knitted items such as hats, mittens, and socks, and linen items
Haven't purchased any off the street, but expect to pay less than in the shops Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft

Bergs Bazars is a mixture of residential and commercial area. It is sort of a courtyard right behind Bergs Hotel and has a lot of nice little shops and cafés and restaurants. On every second and fourth Saturday you will be able to find an Eco market here and once in awhile there is a very small fleamarket here as well! We did not really buy anything here, but we did enjoy a hot chocolate at Emihls Gustafs Chocolate Place - yummy! Leave a Comment

The Central Market in Riga is THE shopping facility per se - it is the biggest market in the Baltics and people from all over Latvia come here to sell their goods. It is located near the central railway station and is housed in 5 huge halls that in former times were hangars for zeppelins. Each hall has a specific emphasis, like meat, fish, vegetables, dairy products and groceries. Outside you find more vegetables, flowers and clothes. Look at this interactive map for the exact location - or just go there and discover it yourself! The market is open every day from 7 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. on Sundays and Mondays and 6 p.m. on all other days.
We bought smoked fish, cheese and vegetables there - and could not resist those fantastic mushrooms either!
