The "Old Riga" is for sure the most beautiful part of the city. Wonderful little streets and very nice buildings. The most part of the "must see" of the city is in this area and it's easy to walk all around the old town. Beautiful squares, little markets, amazing monuments and churches. Leave a Comment

The Powder Tower is a round red-brick fortification tower with walls that are 2.5 metres thick. It is the only tower, of 18, in Riga’s old city wall that has survived. It was first constructed in 1330, but it has been rebuilt several times. The original name was Sand Tower, but it got its present name when gun powder was stored in the tower. The tower has also been used as a prison, a torture chamber and for student parties. Now the War Museum is housed in the Powder Tower. Leave a Comment

This monument, as you might have figured from its title is made in tribute to the city of Riga’s closest friends, which are cities in this case. The monument is located on Dom Square. The monument is made of a series of pieces of different colored, stained glass with the crests of Riga’s partner cities: Rostock, Vilnius, Tallinn, Bremen, Szczeczin, Kobe, Pori, T’blisi, Minsk, Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), and Moscow. This monument was made by Latvian artists and craftsmen Ivars Strautmanis, Juris Gustsons, Janis Zibens and Aleksandrs Stankevics in the around the year 1970. The monument was to thank and pay tribute Riga’s fellow cities to show their national friendship and common political traditions. Leave a Comment

Giving flowers is a very important custom in Latvia. You can see people at all hours of the day or night carrying flowers, either having just received them or preparing to give them. Where do they get flowers at 4:00 a.m.? At the 24-hour flower market of course! Small bouquets start at around 1 lat, and the sky is the limit. Want roses, which color? Orchids? Of course. It is open all year round too. So if you have a fight with your partner at any time day or night, you have no excuse not to get flowers, if you happen to be in Riga! Nearly 40% of all buildings in the center of Riga were built in the Jugendstil, or Art Nouveau, style. Many have not yet been renovated, but the work continues. Leave a Comment Directions: Examples are to be found all over town, but especially on Alberta iela, Elizabetes iela, and Strelnieku iela.

The Dome Cathedral in Riga is the largest church in the Baltics. The organ in the church is the largest in Europe with over 6,700 pipes. Wow! The Dome was destroyed in a riot during 1524, then rebuilt and then destroyed again in a fire in 1547. The Dome also has stained glass panels that tourists can’t miss. Admission to the Dome is 0.50L. It is also home to many concerts and recitals through out the year. Leave a Comment Address: on Dome SquareDirections: In Old Town

The impressive building of the opera was finished in 1863 and housed the German Theatre at that time. It was severly damaged by fire in 1882 and reconcructed upon the original design in 1887. The last major renovation took place from 1990-95. Performances are held from September to end of May. You can also arrange guided tours if you are in a group of minimum 10. Leave a Comment

The Freedom Monument was built in 1935, during the Latvian independence era. The construction of the monument was mainly financed by public donations. It is over 35 metres tall and on top of the grey granite column stands a bronze statue of Liberty. She is holding up three stars, which represents three regions of Latvia. It was forbidden to put flowers at the monument , or to have big gatherings of people near it, during the Soviet occupation. But it was here the first public protest against Soviet were held in 1987. Leave a Comment Directions: On Bivibas iela, north east of Old Town.
