Riga Old Town by FletteMette Riga airport is situated ca 10 km south-west of the city centre. Transport between the airport and the city centre is fairly quick and easy, by bus or taxi. The taxi ride will usually take ca 15-20 minutes, and cost ca 6 - 8 Ls (never more than 10 Ls!), depending on the traffic. (If the traffic is *very* heavy the taxi ride might take as long as almost an hour - but that is an exception!) Read my taxi tip for more information about taxis in Riga...! Bus no 22 and 22a (express) leaves every 10 - 30 minutes for the city centre, the journey between the airport and the centre normally takes ca 30 minutes and costs ca 0.40 Ls. (ca 20 mins - 0.50 Ls for the express bus) More information about the buses, including a list of all the bus stops (lidosta = airport...:o), here: www.rigassatiksme.lv Leave a Comment

Riga's central train station (centrala stacija) is situated in the centre of Riga, a 5-minute walk to the east of the Old Town. (And right next to the bus station.) The station is spacious and modern, with lots of shops & cafés. There's a left luggage room and automatic lockers available, you'll find currency exchange offices, several ATMs and a bank. There's an information office (open 8 - 20) in the large central hall (centrala zale) - but don't expect the surly people there to speak much English, or to be interested in actually giving you information about anything. And don't even try to ask the people at the ticket counters any questions. (Extremely poor service - but the tickets *are* cheap!;o) Tickets for international trains are sold at counters no 1- 6, for domestic trains counters no 7 - 12. I've never seen anyone buy tickets on board the trains, but it's supposed to be possible - it's just a bit more expensive. I've only travelled on short-distance trains in Latvia (my longest train journey in Latvia was Riga - Sigulda, 1 hour 15 mins, price ca 0.70 Ls)- and I found the buses to be a much, *much* better option - the trains I've travelled on were slow, dirty and very crowded, the buses are much more comfortable. Riga taxis by FletteMette Riga's taxi drivers aren't known to be particularly honest, unfortunately - and meters running at insanely high speed, drivers refusing to turn on the meter at all, etc etc etc, aren't uncommon. Always make sure the meter is actually running. You'll find a bit more about Riga's taxis in my "tourist traps" tip...!;o) I have learnt (the hard way!) to stick to the red taxis of Rigas Taksometru Parks, and have never had any problems with taxis belonging to this company. (The taxis of Rigas Taksometru Parks are always red (usually Renault Megane Scenic) - but not *all* red taxis belong to this company... :o) These taxis do however have the company name and phone number (800 1313) printed on the side of the car.) These taxis are also *usually* fairly clean, which isn't always the case with taxis in Riga. Get a taxi in Riga by phoning the number below, or find one (the red ones mentioned are highly recommended...!) at one of the taxi stands: Outside Hotel Latvija, by McDonald's / the Laima clock, at Strelnieku Square (near the House of Blackheads)... by bijo69 Riga's airport is situated about 10km from the city centre. These days it is served by budget airlines like easyjet (my choice from Berlin SXF) and Ryanair. The local carrier Air Baltic has competitive fares aswell, especially from Eastern Europe. The terminals look like they've been renovated recently and are quite modern. You can get to/from the airport on bus 22 (from/to the train/bus stastion) for 0,20 LVL and on bus 22a (from/to the Orthodox Cathedral) for 0,25 LVL. Leave a Comment

by FletteMette Riga airport (RIX) is situated ca 10 km southwest of the city centre. It is a quite small, but modern and fairly efficient airport. There are long queues at check-in at times, so it is advisable to be at the airport at least 1 - 1 1/2 hours before departure. There are a few small cafes, and also a Lido restaurant at the airport - the Lido restaurants are very well-known in Riga, this popular chain of buffet-style restaurants offers a wide selection of Latvian food at reasonable prices. (The Lido restaurant is located in the public area of the airport - *before* you go through security into the departure lounge) There are ATMs, banks (open 9 - 17) and a currency exchange office available at the airport. Various car rental companies have offices here (including Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar...) There's also a tourist information office, open between 07 and 01, where you can book hotels etc. The tax free shops at Riga airport aren't terribly impressive, but you *will* find the most usual brands of cigarettes, alcohol etc. Be aware that one of the shops (the one closest to the security / passport control at the entrance) does *not* accept credit cards. (!) For information about transport to and from the airport, see separate tip... :o) Leave a Comment

by Raimix I had short trip to small city named Saulkalne about 30 kilometres from Riga. Electric train to this side was very cheap! So, I think it is not a problem to go a bit outside from Riga by trains (lets say, to Jurmala, Sigulda and other nice travel destinations in Latvia that are not far from Riga). Train station is shown on my photo. Big clock is placed on this modern building. Leave a Comment Theme: Train

by Raimix I made nice trip with Eurolines bus from Vilnius - it cost about 20 euros to come and back Vilnius-Riga. What is more, I was happy to go by express bus, it took 4,5 hours to go to Riga. The schedule time I used (but it is more frequent): Everyday: Vilnius 07:30 > Riga 12:00 > Tallinn Tallinn > Riga 17:00 > Vilnius 21:30. Leave a Comment

Old town square by Raimix I should say, it is convinient to take a public transportation in Riga. The ticket cost 0,20 Lats or it will be 0,3 euros for one ride. The same is in bus, trolleybus, tram - you just go inside, conductor comes to you, you pay 20 samtims and get small ticket. I used public transport few times, but overally I found nice to walk in the central part of Riga - city is very walkable, of course, better to bring a small map where to find most interesting sights. We took the train to get from Riga to Jurmala and back again and it was a wonderful way to travel! For one, tickets are really cheap (in 2007 we paid 1.25 LVL return p.p.) plus the route is much more scenic than traveling by bus! What I really enjoyed was the wood class waggon we had on our ride back from Jurmala: the seats in these old time waggons seem so uncomfortable, but in reality they are quite comfortable (at least for the 30 minute trainride from Jurmala to Riga!!!) If you are planning to go around in the bus, check here for the schedule. Price is the same as for tram, so no big difference, but bus might take you to the places, where tram or trolleybus don't have lines. Leave a Comment
