The Eurolines bus operators always warn the passengers about the pickpockets in the Riga autobusstation. Of course its true, but its like all over the world, you have to watch your stuff and dont do stupid things, and (hopefully) you will be ok.

It works like this. The unsuspecting tourist is approached by someone asking if you could possibly change five two lat coins into a ten lat note. The only problem is the coins are Lithuanian Lits NOT Lats and only worth a fraction of the lats.......beware!!!!

It is quiet popular to beg for the money on the streets. Think twice before you decide to give money to someone, because mostly people who are really in need do not beg for it.
People who you will see on the streets are mostly alcoholics and will use your money for the shot of vodka.

When you are walking on the street or using underground take double care about your bags and wallet, when you see group of gypsies somewhere near. Especially if you are having a walk near Riga’s Central railways station or Central market.
That people are enough quick to rob you in few seconds and in that case your trip will be spoiled.
Be double careful if you see them robbing someone else. In that case call the police but don’t do anything on your own, because you might get not just robbed but get some punch as well.

Avoid taking a Taxi in Riga. I had the feeling that alomost all drivers are cheaters. The tariff is published as 0,30 to 0,40 Lats per km. As I left Riga I took a Taxi at 4:45 a.m. from my hotel to the main bus station (distance about 1 km) to catch a bus to Tallinn. The taxameter displayed a price of 1,80 Lats, but then the driver pressed a button and 4,82 Lats (8,50 EUR) was displayed... So he charged me 4,82 Lats for a distance of 1 km ... :-(

Some taxi drivers (usually with black Mercedes) drive too fast.
Keep attention and if you have this experience ask them gently to slow down.

Be aware there are a lot of drunk people in Riga.
Without any reason might end up in a fight.
We were lucky a bouncer from the club near our appartment came to help and could avoid a fight.

I would say that the only real danger here is to drive on the roads, and oh men, those Latvia drivers just do not care of any driving rules and it seems they are fed up with their own lives.
