The previous record belonged to St. George Rugby League Club (Sydney) in the Australian Rugby League competition (listed in the Guinness Book of Records). St. George won 11 successive championships from 1956 to 1966 to claim a record which appeared unbreakable until Skonto equalled it in 2001. This was the most emotional and one of the most important games in the history of Latvian hockey. Russia’s team was made up almost entirely of NHL stars, and Russia was clearly planning to win gold at the championship. Latvia managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by engaging in a team game. There were tears of joy in the eyes of players and fans alike when the Latvian national anthem was performed, and this game is recorded in the history of Latvian hockey as one of its most memorable moments.
