The 2000 World Championship, St. Petersburg May 4, Latvia-Russia 3:2 This was the most emotional and one of the most important games in the history of Latvian hockey. Russia’s team was made up almost entirely of NHL stars, and Russia was clearly planning to win gold at the championship. Latvia managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by engaging in a team game. There were tears of joy in the eyes of players and fans alike when the Latvian national anthem was performed, and this game is recorded in the history of Latvian hockey as one of its most memorable moments.

WORLD RECORD HOLDERIn 2002 SKONTO RIGA broke the World Record for most SUCCESSIVE Top Level League Championships in any code of football. The previous record belonged to St. George Rugby League Club (Sydney) in the Australian Rugby League competition (listed in the Guinness Book of Records). St. George won 11 successive championships from 1956 to 1966 to claim a record which appeared unbreakable until Skonto equalled it in 2001. In 2002, Skonto won their 12th successive championship to be sole holders of this incredible WORLD RECORD.
