Jurmala-nice wooden houses

by Turska

Many people go there because of the beach. We don´t care about beaches, but we checked it quickly-it was long and like in real"beach-holliday"-places.Terrible disco-music was playing loud,so if you look for the peacefulness, don´t go to beach near the old centre-it´s long enough to find better places. The old town was nice, not very big,but worth of visit.Old wooden houses, and they were just repaired nicely-and seems like it just keeps on going better, many houses looked like just starting to renovate.Food was allmost free-at least at the plce we went, and so was beer.I´m sadly lost my photos-I´ll add them,if I´ll find them.By the way:Iheard that there is child-friendly and nice waterpark here-sorry,but Idon´t know better-you will surely be told,if you ask someone.

Lido center

by Turska

Lido recreation centreWhen we went to Riga for first time,we were told, that you must go here.So we did.We didn´t find the bus witch takes there-ask for locals,we went by taxi, but they have been coming more expensive. The restaurant is huge log house, and has really three restaurants:ber-cellar,fancier one a´la carte at second floor, and something between at first floor. We ate three different meats, two potatos, salad and desert and drank beer-it was 7lati.Portions were good size to taste more than one(it´s a place were you walk and point with your finger, what you want, and then you pay what you have taken) and it was fun to try things. We like quite spicy food,so Latvian food isn´t very tasteful for us,but it was o.k.,and definetly worth that money. They also have amusement park for children outside-it´s quite small, but maybe children like it.At christmastime they have lights like in American...

Old cars-very rare also

by Turska

We like old cars,so this was a must for us.They have fancy old BMW:s,Merchedes and Rolls Royses and Sovietmechanical wonders. There´s also cars from Stalin, and Brezhnev is sitting at his crashed car-it really hapened with this car.Brehnev is made of vax though ;)For us Finns:there is Keke Rosbergs old diesel-rally car, witch he used when he drove a world championship-time with it.My husband was excaited, when he noticed from the museum terrace, that they were training Formula Ford-cars there.

Shooting klashnekoffs

by kranstonakov

In riga you can take a short taxi ride to a soviet style shooting range. Yeah, its alot of fun. You can chooses from a selection of ex red army weapons to fire and the guy will take pictures of you in action. Althogh a pricier option for a day out its really gud fun. highly recommended.

The beach at Jurmala

by Shetlandshake

The beach stretches for miles. The sand is soft and the sea is very pleasant. The beach is very windy and a little chilly, so you will want to set up camp in the dunes. Find a sandy, sunny spot behind the first line of trees and shrubs. There you will be protected from the winds and will get a marvelous tan!

Bobsleigh in Sigulda

by Lienem

Bobsledding in Sigulda dates back to the late 19th century, when a nobleman called Kropotkin built a 900 ? meter bobsled track at his estate. The modern track was designed in Leipzig and built by a company from Sarajevo. It is 1,420 metres long, and bobsleds can reach a speed of 125 kilometres per hour. The track is appropriate for bobsled and luge competitions and training, and it is part of international circuit.Adventurers can ride a tourist bob called "Vuchko" on Saturdays and Sundays from October 1 to March 1.There is also a summer bobsled from May until October 1.

WWII monument

by jeoren

The WWII monument in Riga is located on the westside of the river. When you cross the bridge south of the citycentre, you see the monument from far. It's not a popular monument among the inhabitants from Riga. In the past there were several times that there were Russians arguing with locals here. You can also reach the monument by tram.

Take a guided tour of the old city

by ardelean

The old city has a fantastic range of architecture and a rich history. It's easy to take a tour and get the overall picture. Tthere's so much to see that a walking tour takes 3-4 hours, but you can cut it short. If your hotel cannot find you a guide, then I can recommend Ilma Lomanovska, Tel. 9 114075, Email ilma_lomanovska@yahoo.com

house of the Blackheads

by sphynxxs

built in 1344, this Gothic building with Dutch Renaissance facade was used to house travelling members of the merchants' guild. One of the most beautiful buildings of the old town and next to the museum of occupation
