The Swedish Gate is the only remaining old city gate, built onto the city walls in 1698 during the Swedish period which explains the name.Who is that funny tourist in the Charlie Brown fleece that keeps following me all over Riga?

Occupation Museum

by Dabs

This museum, housed in a controversial eyesore bunker, chronicles the various periods of Latvian occupation by the Nazis and the Soviets from 1940 to 1991 when Latvia regained their independence. Although it's stories are disturbing and thought provoking, I found experience much less unsettling than our visit to the KGB museum in Vilnius. Many of the signs are in English, German and Russian and there are also books in English explaining some of the exhibits.Admission is free although certainly donations are welcome.

St. John's church

by Dabs

Very close to St. Peter's is another church, St. John's, we didn't go inside this church as it was too early.Lonely Planet says to "Look up to see the stone faces of two monks who, so the story goes, were bricked alive into the wall during the building's construction". I looked around the exterior but didn't see what the guide book was referring to.

Three Brothers

by ginte

The building on Maza Pils Street 17 is the oldest existing residential building in Riga. It was built at the end of the 15th century, when Riga had established good trade relations with merchants from the Netherlands, and architecture from there started to influence the architecture of Riga. The two adjacent buildings (Maza Pils Street 17 and 21) are more recent. Altogether they are called "Three brothers" and represent the medieval dwelling homes during different development stages when houses were built on small pieces of land. In front of the oldest house there is still a small space for a porch with stone benches and stone entryway. The other two houses do not have such additions due to lack of space.

The Dome Cathedral gates

by ginte

I've found Dome Cathedral quite beautiful and interesting for to look at more, but unfortunatelly our guide was always in a hurry. So, that's one of the things I'm going to do when I'll go back to Riga. The square of the Dome Cathedral is interesting enough in looking around.

The Dome Cathedral

by ginte

The foundation stone of the Dome was laid in 1211. Its present appearance is a result of impact of numerous architectural styles during centuries. The oldest part, built in the manner of Romanesque, is the Altar. Gothic style has left its influence on the development of Basilica, Baroque has changed the Dome Spire to present state, by the way, the height of the spire is 90 m, as well as the Easter Pediment. The pseudo-gothic Western Entrance was built in the second part of the 19th cent.
