The Old Town

by juliev

U must see the Old Town in Riga cause it's full of great buildings: ancient one, churches with its Dome Sobor, squares, reconstructed buildings including Latvias Seimas, little cosy streets with bars, cafes and shops. There are some beautiful brigdes through Daugava river, the fascinating view is coming to look at all from the birds flight on the top of Dome's Sobor.

House of Blackheads - XIV-XX century

by satara

Did you know that...The Blackheads was characteristically a common union of young, unmarried merchants and ship captains in the Hansa cities, which chose St. Maurice to be their patron. St. Mauritius was an imaginary African black moor (from this the name of the brotherhood “the Blackheads” comes). Due to their exceptional status the Blackheads played an important role in the society life and traditions; many VIPs of that time (including Russian tsars) took part in events organized by the Blackheads. As a German merchant club the Brotherhood of Blackheads existed in Riga until 1939.I was impressed by the architecture of this amazing and mysterious house - I happened to pass near it at night so the lights and all atmosphere made me a great impression..

Riga Dome - XIII-XX centuries

by satara

The building of St. Mary’s Cathedral or Riga Dome and Monastery for Riga’s Order of Monks, was started in 1211, as Riga’s Archbishop’s Chapel.I was mostly impressed by a wide alcove, which was formed by the cathedral’s walls 3 m deep down into archaeological strata of many centuries allowing to detect the Dome Cathedral’s original size and to view the primary foundation of the cathedral. It's amazing how during the years the "ground" which we walk on is not the same ground which our ancestors walked - we are almost one floor higher! Does that mean that after some millions years (to keep other factors constant) our Earth would become "a larger ball" than it is now?:)

Cat house

by LanaFromRiga

The house was named after the two black cats perched on the roof. At the turn of the century the owner of the building was exiled from the Great Guild across the street and ordered the cats to be turned with their tails towards the Guild. The cats were eventually turned back after a long court battle, and the man was admitted back to the Guild.

Roland's statue

by LanaFromRiga

In the 14th century Roland's statues appeared all over Northern Germany as a symbol of justice and freedom. Roland's statue was placed in Town Hall Square in front of the Guilds of Hanseatic cities. It is interesting to learn that the pointed and of Roland's sword was the point from which different distances in Riga and Latvia were counted.
