Riga Taxis

Many Riga taxis overcharge (like anywhere) and if you pick one up from the rank in front of the railways station you pay a premium and can get any one of many taxi firms. Some don't have seatbelts. Order a taxi from Riga Taxi on 8001313. Their operators are helpful and speak English well enough to get you a taxi to the right place at the right time. They are distinguished by using red Renault cars with 8001313 down the side. You can also take one of these taxis from a rank outside the Hotel de Rome , the Hotel Reval Latvija or from the airport. In Riga the tariff should be 'A' and from the airport it should be 'B'. Within the city public transport is plentiful with buses and trolley-buses. You don't normally have a long wait and you can pay the conductor. Currently it is a flat rate of 30 santims (30 pence).

Small Change

Don't get caught out as I did by a smartly dressed man asking first in Latvian and then in English, if I could change 10 Lat coins in 2 Lat denominations for a 10 Lat note. He said the bank wouldn't change them without charging him 2 Lats.It wasn't until latter I realised he had given me Liti from Lithuania worth 1/4 of the value, if you can find anywhere that will change them. Its worth checking all change as the coins look similar.Stupid thought it was a bit strange.

Opening Hours of Riga Cathedral

Practically all guide books list the cathedral of Riga as one of the most important sites of the city. Yet, Riga makes it hard to visit it! At least from the inside.I do not remember the exact times, but it is open for a few hours per day at max. On Saturday it closes at 14h00, on Sunday and Monday it is closed all day. So if you arrive in Riga on Saturday around 14h00 and stay until Monday evening, like we did, bad luck ... Come early, in any case before 14h00. No real alternative if you want to see it.

When we got into the taxi a fellow driver shouted something in Russian to our driver. It looked as if the meter was running, but it was not. At the destination the driver just asked for a price, probably five time as a high as the normal price. Avoid taxis. Just do not take taxis in Riga, public transport is good anyway.

Be careful when buying Amber....

Be careful when buying Amber. A lot of it is just plastic, with insects put inside, and worthless.We chose a shop that was recommended by the tourist organisations.
