  • Bus stop sign - Riga Region
    Bus stop sign
    by Dabs
We used buses to get to Sigulda and Rundale Palace (via Bauska). The central bus station has boards with schedules listing the time of departure and time of arrival. Make sure you are not getting on a slower bus that makes all of the stops if you are in a hurry.

Tickets can be purchased at the ticket window or on the bus, if you are not sure exactly where you are going, it's not a bad idea to use the ticket window. It's also helpful if you have exact change or smaller bills.

Buses are extremely cheap and seemed to be always on time, the most we paid was 1.2 lv.

When you are catching a return bus, make sure you are standing at a sign looking like the one in the attached picture.

We got in later in the evening a couple of times and didn't feel unsafe in the area around the bus station or walking back to our hotel. As always though, keep your valuables somewhere safe.

Just 0,40 LVL and you can go from the Centre to another Riga's district. The map with trams routs is in every trams first wagon.
You can buy ticket inside of the first tram's vagon. It will cost 0,50 LVL. Tickets sells tram driver. The best way for tickets buying - is in Narvessen or Rimi shop. You can buy many tickets and use them when necessary. Don't forget to put ticket in speciall yellow box inside each wagon.
List of trams you will see lower.

    Eurolines bus to Vilnius

  • Longer haul bus tickets are sold at the Eurolines office although I think I saw a few people buying on the bus. It's probably best to reserve ahead in the summer months if you can.

The fare from Riga to Vilnius was 7 lv, 14 lv round trip. No extra charge for luggage.

The buses were reasonably comfortable and the bus made one stop in each direction for a bathroom/snack break. The entire journey was around 4 1/2 hours.

The bus goes through passport control and a guard comes on board. US passports are stamped so they do take them from you.

  • Normally we try to use public transportation but we were coming in late so we arranged through our hotel for a taxi (I think it was actually staff of the hotel) for 8 lv. It was nice after a long day of traveling to have a car waiting for you.

The taxi ride to the airport was quick, around 20 minutes.

Taxis can be hailed on the street or prebooked by telephone. Riga Taxi (tel: 800 1313, toll free) and Bona (tel: 800 5050, toll free) are both reputable companies. Whenever possible, visitors should only use the official metered taxis. When taking nonmetered taxis, it is essential to agree the fare in advance. A tip of 10% is generally expected and appreciated.

The television torn is one of the highest in Eastern Europe. The better view of the Television torn is from the ship. You can have 1 hour excursion by ship. There are many ships in the coast of Daugava. Just come and chose what ship and what water trip you want. Prices from 2 till 5 Ls.

The quickest way to make your way around the country is by bus rather than train. Furthermore, buses cover a much greater area than trains and sometimes when you use the rail service, you will have to use a bus to complete certain parts of the journey where the train service does not cover. Both forms of transport leave regularly from the central stations in Riga. For rail services go to Stacijas Laukums and for bus connections the station is located at Pragas iela 1.

This airport is 8 km SW of Riga. You can buy a visa on arrival at the airport, too - for those who need it.
The train station consists of two halls: the big one for international trains and the small hall for local trains.
The bus terminal sits just a few hundred metres from the train station and adjacent to the central market, which is big enough!
The ferry terminal and the yacht harbour lie north of the old town.

There are 4 public transports in Riga: trams, trolleybusses, busses and minibusses. Ticket's price in trams, trolleybusses and busses is 0,20LVL (0,14EUR). Mostly in all this transports is special person: ticket seller to whom you have to give money. Normally this tickets seller seat in the middle of trasport in lace with title "Konduktora vieta".
In some trolleybusses and busses tickets sells drivers, usualy in front of this transport is title "Vaditajs - konduktors". Tickets in minibusses are more expensive, you will spend 0,25 LVL (0,175EUR) or 0,50LVL (0,35EUR) and tickets seller there always driver.
