Traveling around Riga

by Dabs

Although I'm sure there are some perfectly good reasons why one might take public transportation in Riga, I found that I enjoyed walking around looking at the architecture and parks and found no need to figure out the buses or trams.Old Riga is very walkable, there are few cars in the city center as entry by car required a pass of some sort.

Buses for daytrips

by Dabs

We used buses to get to Sigulda and Rundale Palace (via Bauska). The central bus station has boards with schedules listing the time of departure and time of arrival. Make sure you are not getting on a slower bus that makes all of the stops if you are in a hurry.Tickets can be purchased at the ticket window or on the bus, if you are not sure exactly where you are going, it's not a bad idea to use the ticket window. It's also helpful if you have exact change or smaller bills.Buses are extremely cheap and seemed to be always on time, the most we paid was 1.2 lv.When you are catching a return bus, make sure you are standing at a sign looking like the one in the attached picture. We got in later in the evening a couple of times and didn't feel unsafe in the area around the bus station or walking back to our hotel. As always though, keep your valuables somewhere safe.

From the airport

by Dabs

Normally we try to use public transportation but we were coming in late so we arranged through our hotel for a taxi (I think it was actually staff of the hotel) for 8 lv. It was nice after a long day of traveling to have a car waiting for you.The taxi ride to the airport was quick, around 20 minutes.

Taxi's in Riga

by Fen

Taxis can be hailed on the street or prebooked by telephone. Riga Taxi (tel: 800 1313, toll free) and Bona (tel: 800 5050, toll free) are both reputable companies. Whenever possible, visitors should only use the official metered taxis. When taking nonmetered taxis, it is essential to agree the fare in advance. A tip of 10% is generally expected and appreciated.

Buses in Riga

by Fen

The quickest way to make your way around the country is by bus rather than train. Furthermore, buses cover a much greater area than trains and sometimes when you use the rail service, you will have to use a bus to complete certain parts of the journey where the train service does not cover. Both forms of transport leave regularly from the central stations in Riga. For rail services go to Stacijas Laukums and for bus connections the station is located at Pragas iela 1.

Lidosta airport

by AndyRG

This airport is 8 km SW of Riga. You can buy a visa on arrival at the airport, too - for those who need it. The train station consists of two halls: the big one for international trains and the small hall for local trains. The bus terminal sits just a few hundred metres from the train station and adjacent to the central market, which is big enough! The ferry terminal and the yacht harbour lie north of the old town.

Take the bus

by Ben-UK

I travelled by bus from Vilnius, approx 6 hours.Tallinn is 6 hours away too. There's a Eurolines office in the bus station. The bus station (Autoosta) is only about 10 minutes walk from the old town (Vecriga). The train station is 5 minutes from the bus station. There are trains hourly to Jurmala (40 minutes).

Overnight bus

by orlikins

We got a Eurolines bus from Tallinn, which left around 23.30 and arrived in Riga around 6.30In Ireland, a Eurolines bus is usually a coach. Here it was a very uncomfortable basic 4 wheel rectangular vehicle. I was squashed from all sides :/ Still what do you expect for £10? No train between Tallinn & RigaHere is a picture from our hotel room of the Riga train station.

We took a bus from Tallinn....

by Boka

We took a bus from Tallinn. The company was Eurolines. Trip lasted about 5-6 hours. Bus was ok but it seems like the toilet is not always available. There were only 2 stops on the way, Pärnu and border (didn't see a public toilet?).Price was 200EEK one way.Eurolines buses are very popular so you should book in advance. www.eurolines.ee
