Already in 1214 the red-brick castle was constructed on a site where there previously had been a wooden fortress. Turaida Castle belonged to the archbishops of Riga and was a castle with five towers and high walls. In the 18th century the gunpowder store was hit by a lightning and the castle was destroyed. Not until 1953 restoration work begun. One part that has been restored is the main tower. It is 42 metres high and from the top floor you have a nice view over the Gauja Valley.
Turaida is an ancient Livonian word meaning “Gods Garden”.
The castle is open every day between 10 - 17 in November to April, and between 10 - 18 in May to October.

There has been a congregation in Sigulda since 1225. And according to documents there has been a church at the site of the present Lutheran church at least since 1483. It was then called the church of St Bartholomew. The church has been damaged and renovated many times. The last big renovation was in 1930, when the new tower was built.
During the Soviet era Sigulda was the only church in the neighbourhood functioning as a church between 1965 - 1990. The church is white with orange roof and is situated in a park with a pond in front of it. It is a nice place!

Behind Sigulda New Castle are the ruins of an old knights’ stronghold. It was built by the Brotherhood of Sword between 1207 - 1226. When they lost the power it was taken over by the Livonian Order in 1236. The fortification was overrun several times and destroyed and rebuilt. Since the great Northern War (1700 - 21) the fortification castle has not been repaired and what you can see today are two of the watchtowers (one is the tower of the main gate) and the remains of a Gothic Chapel.
There is also an open-air stage here that is used for theatre and concerts in summertime.

New Sigulda Castle was built between 1878 - 81 and was then the residence of the grand duke Kropotkin. It has then been used by writers and journalist for recreation and as a sanatorium for heart patients. Now Sigulda Regional Council is situated here and the building is closed to public. But I had read there was a restaurant in the building (with a nice terrace in summertime), so I entered a hall. It was all empty and a sign on a closed door said 12 - 14. It was just after 12, but a Monday in winter so the restaurant was probably closed.
There is a statue of the Latvian writer Artis Kronvalds (1837 - 75) standing in the courtyard in front of the castle. It was made in 1938 by T. Zajkalus.

The castle in Krimulda was built between 1255 - 1273 and then belonged to the Riga Dome capitul, when Albert II was bishop. It was mostly used as a guesthouse for dignitaries on visit. In 1601 it was taken over by the Swedes and soon after it was burned down. It was never rebuilt and what you can see today is only ruins.

Walk around the castle embraced by the dense green forest. There are an interesting museum which tells all about the history of the area and castle itself. Visit the Tower and climb up to the top (watch out stairs they are steep) and take pictures of the castle, the river and the forest.
I like the remains of an old castle more than a shinny and neatly renovated ones. It would be nice to take photos when the moon is over the castle. Unfortunately, its a future project!

Of all the castles around Sigulda, Krimulda castle is the least well preserved. Only a couple of stones remain of it and no efforts to preserve them were made until now. Built between 1255 and 1273, is just a little younger the Turaida and Sigulda castles. It was destroyed in 1601 by the Bishop of Riga, who held Turaida Castle at that time. While there’s a scheduled bus service from Sigulda as well as a cable car running from a place close to the tourist information office, I recommend to walk to Krimulda castle. There are some wooden steps leading from the valley up to the castle ruins. These are found close to Viktor’s cave.
