Dundaga castle

by Inguuna

The castle, which was built in 13th century for Riga's ministers was burned and renewed many, many times but still, is very well preserved. In old times it also belonged to bishop of Kurzeme, as both to Polish, and German conquerors. The last owners here were members from Osten-Zaken family. Once it was as manor castle, but nowadays here's located school.Above the entrance you can see coat of arms of previous castle owners - landlords. But if you go in the castle, in it's square near the entrance you'll see on both sides two men in the stone, so on the right stands bishop of Riga, but on the left stands a knight. There are also some legends, which are connected with the castle. One of it tells about Green Jumprava, a girl who usually wore green clothes. One night she secretly saw dwarfs' party therefore she was immured in the castle's walls. It is said that sometimes she haunts.

Dundaga crocodile

If you go to Dundaga castle then see also Crocodile sculpture, which is located not far from castle. The sculpture is formed for local inhabitant Blumental, who for a long time stayed in Australia and hunted crocodiles.

Mersraga lighthouse / Mersraga baka

by Inguuna

This impressive lighthouse, which details were brought from Paris, was built in the end of 19th century for boat safety. I don't know if there's possibility to get into the lighthouse, because both times were we have been there, it was closed. If you'll be there in the late evening prepare good clothes because here are swarms of gats, brrr.

Mersrags

by Inguuna

Although in this place's name is mentioned cape, you can't feel it, like in Kolka cape. Even between the places is not so long distance, here you can't see so many shells like in Kolka and I think it's rather better to wait here sundown on big stones which are heated by the sun during day. If you stay here very calm, you probably will see some water bird, because this is the place were many birds are resting.

Kolka cape / Kolkas rags

by Inguuna

Here you can see real cape, because here meet Baltic see with Riga gulf. The time flies very quickly enjoying nice shells in a shelly beach and watching how see with gulf are beating waves together, but during see storm better not to be here, because waves here are very high. Although it's not visible, cape tongue goes very far in the see, and in old times this place was dangerous for sailors, their boats very often stranded. And local inhabitants used it, they built a fire and robed stranded boats. If you'll look very carefully in the see, you'll see a lighthouse.

Liepniekvalka caves

by Inguuna

Here are the longest cave labyrinths in Latvia, which are more than 60 meters long. Getting to the caves I'd say is very interesting, because where exactly they are you can only guess. Caves are quite jagged and with many entrances, though it's not allowed to crawl into caves.

Vandzene manor house

by Inguuna

Honestly to this place we didn't drive specially, because thought that in this road section there's nothing to see. So, we drove and near the road we saw pretty nice building, which previously was manor house and it was owned by baron Firks. Classicism style building is supplemented with large garden. Nowadays it houses school.

Abava river's falls / Abavas rumba

by Inguuna

This is not very large waterfall, I'd say it is really small. Falls are not high, but wide, quite similar as Venta river's falls, but smaller. Falls are stronger in spring when snow is falling; in that time you can see here many canoes that love this place. But for watchers, near the river is a meadow, where one can relax and have a meal.

Kolka Lutheran church

by Inguuna

This interesting and nice church is located almost near the sea and it was built from the boulders in the end of 19th century. It takes over cozy feelings when you enter in the church, because it's not so large and here you can feel very pleasing atmosphere. In the interior you can see modern altarpiece.

Rocky coastline and jetty of Roja

by Inguuna

Just as it is in the coast of Vidzeme, in some places here also is seen rocky coastline which gives very beautiful view to all the seaside. And walking along jetty is pretty cool, too. It is very impressive view when storm is coming, but I don't recommend to walk along jetty at that time.
