  • Go beachcombing at Cape Kolka

    Kolka Things to Do

Cape Kolka is a windswept spot on the north west coast of Latvia. Its claim to fame is that it is the point where the Baltic Sea meets the Gulf of Riga: as a result of the two sets of currents colliding, a lot of sand and other debris that is transported by wave action is dumped at this point, making it an ideal spot for beachcombing. Because of...

  • Scale the Slitere lighthouse

    Kolka Things to Do

The Slitere lighthouse near Kolka is an impressively orderly place - even the portaloos are housed beneath their own concrete structure (see photo)! In truth there's not a lot to see or do here, but it is fun to take advantage of the elevated vantage point from the top of the lighthouse and look out over the flat, flat landscape. We were also...

    Talsi Things to Do

This synagogue was built in 19th century. It is not a synagogue anymore as almost entire Jewish population was killed in WWII – the tragic moment of our history. Now it is residential house for people. It is located on Kalna street (Kalna iela). Ask for singagoga (into Latvian) if you can’t find it.

    Sabile Sports & Outdoors

Abava valley offers a great deal of sports activities, ragning from cycling, hiking, horseriding and canoeing in summer to skiing in winter. The valley loor and the hilltops offer some good cross-country skiing, but less known is that some of the hills like Makiskalns and Kalmarkalns (both near sabile) also offer good downhill skiing!

  • Sabile Wine Hill

    Sabile Things to Do

Sabile Wine Hill is officially the world’s most northern vineyard, as mentioned in Guiness World Records Book. You can actually taste the wine at the entrance of this vineyard but don't expect too much of it. The Wine Hill itself is far more to enjoy - you walk there, taste the grapes. Walk uphill and enjoy the view of Sabile town.

by PeteNL Updated Jan 16, 2004

It can be fun (and rewarding!) to visit and write about places that no one has written about. Here on VT I have already "found" a few of such places, like Fendels in Austria, Caha Mountains in Ireland, Meiningen in Germany or Winsum and Varsseveld in the Netherlands.

For other towns, I am happy to give credit to others who described the area and stimulated me doing this: for example Sabsi and Globetrott for writing such great pages about Great Skelligs in Ireland, and PavlikNL for writing about the Posbank area in Rheden-De Steeg, near Arnhem.
