House of Blackheads, Riga

by hopang

The House of Blackheads (Melngalvju nams) is located at the Town Hall Square right in the heart of the Old Town of Riga. It is a landmark of Riga and a very popular tourist attraction. It is one of the most beautiful architectural buildings in the Old Town of Riga. The original House of Blackheads dates back to the 14th century. It was erected for the members of the Blackheads who were young unmarried merchants from several North European and Baltic countries such as Estonia and Latvia. The original Gothic style building was destroyed in the Second World War and the present reconstructed building was erected only in 1999. The House of the Blackheads today is home to a museum, Riga's Tourist Information Office and a concert hall. The area around the Town Hall Square is a favourite meeting place for the locals.

Laima Clock, Riga

by hopang

Laima Clock is located at the junction of Aspazijas and Brivibas Streets in the heart of the Old Town of Riga. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Old Town. Laima in local language literally means happiness. Laima Clock was erected in 1924 and was donated by Laima Chocolate Company of Latvia to the city of Riga. The area around the Laima Clock is a favourite meeting place for the locals. The Freedom Monument, another popular tourist attraction is located just behind the Laima Clock. Don't miss Laima Clock and the Freedom Monument when you are in Riga for your vacation!

Riga Central Market

by hopang

Riga Central Market is located at Negu Street near the bank of Daugava River just within a stone's throw from the Central Bus Station in the heart of the city of Riga. It is the largest market in Baltic countries and Northern Europe and is also one of the largest outdoor markets in Europe!Riga Central Market was established in 1930 after moving into the old Zeppelin hangars which were no longer in use as depicted in our photo above. The five large semi-cylindrical shaped hangars are home to various sections of the markets dealing in grocery, dairy products and fresh fruits and vegetables to fresh meat, fish and chickens. Wide range of other consumer goods especially clothings, apparels and household utensils are on sale in the markets. Cigarettes, wines and liquors can be bought cheaply from Riga Central Market.

St Peter's Church

by mykitten

St Peter's Church was originally built in 1209. The current tower has been in existence since 1746, it was restored in 1973.There is a lift to get to the top of the tower, which is about 70 metres in height. The views are astounding. Definately worth a visit.

Padlock Bridge at Pilsetas Canal

by mykitten

There is seemingly a tradition in Riga that when you get married you go to the Pilsetas Canal and you both lock a padlock to the bridge and throw the key into the river. The bridge is a popular place to visit and the park is pretty with some interesting monuments as well as a peaceful vibe.

Riga- a bit of sightseeing

by zaffaran

What to do if you are so exhausted that you can't walk any more but you still want to do some sightseeing? Get on the tram(or bus) and go ahead! We did so and what look we found!Somewhere almost in the fields we found a street dedicated to our beautiful capital city - Warszawa! hahahaha

Riga- Saint Peter's church

by zaffaran

With its partly wooden tower it is one of Riga's landmarks. Originally built in the13th century collapsed and was rebuilt many times.Last time it was destroyed was during WW2. There's a photo exhibiotion inside (0,5 lat) or you can also climb up the tower (2 lats). The staff turned out to be a bit rude.

Riga- a souvenir from the Soviet Union.

by zaffaran

I think that this kind of souvenir can be found in many post-communistic countries- why not in Riga? We made a trip to have a close look at it and when we did it we got really surprised! The building which looked massive from the distance occurred to be not higher that 15 or 17 floors! As I remember well, these days it belongs to Latvian Academy of Science.

Riga - Ethnographic Museum

A very nice place beautifully situated in the outskirts of the city. Worth paying a visit in order to get to know how people in Latvia used to live in the past. Big area (100 hectares), very well maintained.

Riga - the recovering capital city

by lotharlerch

Riga is by far the biggest city in the Baltics, in size as big as Tallinn and Vilnius together. It seems that it suffered more under Soviet rule than the both other capitals but it is recovering in an impressive way. See my Riga page!
