Latgale - Church in Aglona

by lotharlerch

Latgale, the eastern region of Latvia, seems to be far back in time as compared to the both other regions. Here - other than in the rest of Latvia which is Lutheran, the people are Roman Catholics due to the long Polish rule which was here.Aglona.is the most important place of pilgrimage in the Baltics. On every 15 August about 150000 pilgrims meet here.

Kurzeme - Kolkas Rags and Slitere National Park

by lotharlerch

Kolkas Rags is the nothernmost point of Kurzeme and separates the bay of Riga from the Baltic Sea. The region south of Kolkas Rags, today the Slitere National Park, was in ancient time inhabitated by the Lives who are other than the Latvians relatives of the Estonians and Finns and speaking a similar language. Unfortunately the native speakers are now dying out, about a generation ago they were living as fishermen along the coast southwest from Kolkas Rags in the area around Mazirbe.

Cesis - the ruins of the castle

by lotharlerch

This is the biggest castle of the Teutonic Knigths in the Baltcs. Its construction started in 1220 and it was abandned in 1703.Latvia is a very young state. Its territory was under many different rulers as the Swedes, the Teutonic Knights, Poland and the hardest and most influential period was the Russian and later Soviet rule which even left a heavy ethnic distortion behind. One part of the Latvians emigrated, an other was deported to many different regions of the Soviet Colonial Empire, the last one on European territory after the Habsburg and Turkish Empire were destroyed. These Latvians were replaced by Russians, Caucasians, Uzbeks etc. who often can not even speak Latvian after being more than half a century here but are now all claiming to be Latvians but only because Latvia became a member of the EU.
