Birini Palace

by Lilasel

The first information about this inhabited locality dates back to the 13th century and can be traced down in old legends and chronicles. Birini Palace was built from 1857 – 1860. The building’s architectural style is more neogothic but the interior is dominated by romanticism. Birini Palace has a beautiful regular park with a stunning view.

Do not miss the fish !!!

by josecarlos

If you go to Latvia, you have to taste the delicious and fresh fish sold in small markets close to the coast. It is incredibly cheap and tasty (about 3 pounds for almost a kilo of Salmon). If your budget is limited, fish can be a great option. Accompany it with "Alus" (Latvian for "Beer"). You´ll save a lot, and you´ll enjoy it.

What to do in Liepaja?

by niamey00

According to the city's tourist brochures, plenty! "Pristine beaches, world's longest amber necklace and amber clock, centuries old architecture, excellent music and nightlife at Liepaja pubs and clubs." Liepaja, although Latvia's third largest city, only has about 100,000 people, so it is easy to see the sites in a day. Don't miss the northern part of town where the former Soviet military base, Karosta, is located. Now rundown and mostly abandoned, the Russian Orthodox Church is being renovated, but there is little hope for the Soviet era tenements surrounding it.You can also stay in the former Karosta prison. They put on a show of prison life too. Check it out here.

The BEST children's park in Europe?

by niamey00

Head to Ventspils for the children's park. There are many different play structures for different ages, pedal-powered cars to drive around the park, a stage for performances (mostly on the weekend), and a small cafe. Best of all, it's free! After a long drive from Klaipeda, it was a welcome stop for our three-year-old. Ventspils has plenty for adults to see too.

Enjoy the beach in Jurmala

by niamey00

Jurmala is the major Latvian beach resort about 20 km from Riga. On a warm summer day, you will find most of Riga here, but the beach is long and there is room for everyone. Outside of summer, you will find the beach nearly deserted.

Aglona is a place...

by vairab

approximately 30 km from Preili to the south - east. It is well known with Catholic church. In 1768 Dominican monks began to build the present stone church and they finished it in 12 years, in 1780. The new church was sanctified by the Assistant Bishop of Mogilev, Ian Beneslavsky. In 1980, when the Catholics of Latvia celebrated the 200th anniversary of Aglona's Church, Pope John Paul II conferred the title of Basilica to Aglona's Church. On the 9th of September 1993 Pope John Paul II visited Aglona. An icon of the Virgin Mary is at the altar and its miraculous abilities have proved true not just once. There is a story referring to it. Around 1380 the Byzantine Emperor Manuel II presented the icon of the Holy Virgin to the Lithuanian Prince Vitautas as a token to the Lithuanian people upon his own conversion to Christianity. Vitautas did not part from it during the long period of wars....

Kuldiga

by Lilasel

Every traveller who has chosen to steer the route of his excursion through the western part of Latvia, called Kurzeme, certainly make a point of visiting the hoary and likely Kuldiga, the old capital of the Kurland Dukedom. This is one of the loveliest provincial towns of Latvia. There is the waterfall - Ventas rumba - the widest waterfall in Europe, its normal width is more than 240 m.

"The Switzerland of Latvia"

by Lilasel

You should visit Sigulda - our Switzerland. This town is located 53 km away from Riga in the picturesque valley of the Gauja river. Hilly river banks, sandstone caves and ruins of the medieval castles make it so very unique.Sigulda is attractive in all seasons. It is the centre of downhill skiing in the winter. In summer, it is a popular place for boating. You must visit the Gauja National Park where several walking and cycling trails are made. Among the "must" sights would be the Sigulda Castle Ruins, the medieval Turaida Castle, panoramic Painters' Hill, the Gutmana Cave. The Gauja National Park is particularly beautiful in the golden autumn.

Lake Araishu

by Lilasel

The lake Araishu is renowned both by the great number of historically cultural monuments and the fact that, indeed, it covers a "sunken" castle. "In ancient times lakes are said to have traveled around in the air looking for a place to settle down. If somebody happened to guess its name the lake fell to the ground covering everything underneath, save for the one who had guessed the lake's name." Araishi lake-castle is a reconstructed dwelling-site of the ancient tribe of Latgallians dating back to the 9th c.A.D.

Raunas Staburags

by Lilasel

Raunas Staburags (the rock of Rauna) is found about 1 km upstream from the bridge over the river Rauna, southwards on the right bank of the river. It is remarkable sightseeing place - here you can see a very interesting formation of porous rock. It is a pity that tourists gradually destroy it by careless treading on it without thinking of what they leave behind.
