Kuldiga

by DanielF

This tiny town, lost in the heart of the Kurzeme region, felt like being in a border land: wooden buildings, old churches and people that stare at you like you were the first foreigner they have ever seen. The region of Kurzeme receives its name from the Cours, one of the Baltic tribes that eventually made the Latvian nation. Kuldiga is the most historic town in the area.

Sigulda

by DanielF

Sigulda, in the region of Vidzeme, is supposed to be one of the most popular daytrips from Riga. However, when we went there, on a sunny and bright day, we were completely alone. Not only were there no tourists at all but the place itself looked like a ghost town, totally deprived from human presence. The surroundings of Sigulda provide some of the most beautiful scenery in the country: several Medieval castles in different condition, the picturesque valley of the river Gauja and enchanting fruit orchards. We opted for staying here in order to explore the Gauja National Park.

Tip Photo
Bauska

by DanielF

Bauska is a small town in the region of Zemgale, near the Lithuanian border, at the point where the rivers Memele and Musa converge. Although there is not much more to see than the ruins of its Medieval castle, it is worth stopping in Bauska for half a day when driving from Riga to Vilnius.

Tip Photo
Rundale Castle

by DanielF

Rundale Castle is ranked high among the tourist destinations in Latvia. Having seen hundreds of much bigger and richer palaces in Europe, you certainly would not come to Latvia for this castle. But if you happen to be in the area, a visit to this creation of Rastrelli is a good idea. You will learn about the Romantic stories behind the construction of the castle and will be puzzled by the remoteness of the location for such a building.

Riga

by DanielF

Riga, with a population of 800.000, is not only the country's biggest city, but also the most important in all the three Baltic republics. Of German origins, then Russian, now Riga is a proud city with multiple faces that lies at the bottom of a broad and well protected gulf, on the mouth of the Daugavas river.

Ainazi

by Leipzig

Ainazi is a small town at the Baltic Sea close to the Estonian border. In the centre you find almost only red pinted houses. Highlight is the historical building of Ainazi Naval School, built in 1864. The region around Ainazi is very attractive with rich natural heritage. There you will find Randu meadows - the largest coastal meadows in Latvia.

Riga - the capital

by Leipzig

The city was founded together with the erection of the monastery in 1190. It became member of the Hanseatic League in 1282 and because of its strategic position between Central Europe and Russia it developed into an important commercial centre. Over the centuries different rulers left their fingerprints in Riga, which can still be seen in its architecture. After World War I, the independence of Latvia was proclaimed and Riga became capital. Latvia was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940 and became independent in 1991 with Riga as capital.

Irbene - Former Soviet Military Town

by histamin32

Irbene is a ghost-town, with crumbling Soviet style blocks, formerly used by the Soviet army, now abandoned. Particularly interesting are the murals in the former assembly hall. Nearby is also a radio-telescope.

Bauska

by inchick

The town of Bauska developed at the confluence of the Musa and Memele Rivers where the Lielupe River springs up.This can be seen on the Kibaksala Isle behind the Bauska Castle. The town of Bauska on the left bank of the Memele river started to grow after 1584 when the Duke of Courland gave an order ti relocate it from the narrow peninsula at the Bauska Castle. In 1609 Bauska was granted municipal rights

Liepaja

by in4ik

The residents of Liepaja, known as liepajnieki, have a reputation for being extremely proud of their home and with good reason. Already mentioned in historical documents as a settlement for Latvian and Livonian fishermen in 1253, the city became a major port during the Grand Duchy of Kurland's golden age in the 17th century. Tsar Alexander III built a fortress here at the turn of the previous two centuries for the Russian navy and the city also served as headquarters for the retreating Latvian government in 1919.Unfortunately, much of the historical city centre fell victim to the destruction of the Second World War. The city became a major naval port for Soviet submarines during the cold war which turned into a graveyard of rusting communist ideology after independence. Change is, however, in the air and the city and port are experiencing a revival without the help of Russian...
