When we got into the taxi a fellow driver shouted something in Russian to our driver. It looked as if the meter was running, but it was not. At the destination the driver just asked for a price, probably five time as a high as the normal price.
Avoid taxis.
Just do not take taxis in Riga, public transport is good anyway. Leave a Comment

Also architecture...
Church of the Holy Trinity (Trisvienibas Baznica) in Liepaja. It boasts one of the few organs remaining in Europe whose original works were built by Johann Sebastian Bach's favorite organ builder. In Soviet times, there were regular concerts, which generated enough income to restore the church. Now, the tour buses are gone, there's little income — time and its henchmen, the woodworms, are once again taking their toll. This picture is from 1995; we have not been back since to see how the church is doing. Rastrelli did the interior! Leave a Comment

Unit of Latvian currency, Lat is worth about 1 british pound. Since cards are often not accepted when you buy thinkgs in shops, you will be faced to handle with lots of coins (smallest bank note is 5 Lats). Keep this in mind! Leave a Comment

Practically all guide books list the cathedral of Riga as one of the most important sites of the city. Yet, Riga makes it hard to visit it! At least from the inside.
I do not remember the exact times, but it is open for a few hours per day at max. On Saturday it closes at 14h00, on Sunday and Monday it is closed all day. So if you arrive in Riga on Saturday around 14h00 and stay until Monday evening, like we did, bad luck ...
Come early, in any case before 14h00.

The accomodation in Riga is VERY expensive as this is the only big metropolis in Latvia. I think these prices works like a trap for the tourist, so T make here my advise about it.
If you are going to Riga, my advise is, the best choose for accomodation is sleeping in Jurmala. The hotels in Riga are very expensive indeed, after all the quality is not the best.In Jurmala (only about 30 minutes by train) you can find lots of hotels with very good prices, and you will be only 20km out from Riga.
