Rent a car and go to Estonia from Latvia

by microsensazione

On 2009 I used a car by HERTZ car renter to go from Latvia to Estonia and, another time, a car to go from Estonia to Latvia. In each cases I did not pay surcharges. On 2008 I did the same thing using a car by AVIS car renter. Also this time no surcharges.I think it's normal there are no surcharges for crossing the border because Estonia and Latvia are actually under Schengen Agreement so there are no frontiers between these two Countries.Take a look about on "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Agreement"...and enjoy to visit Estonia! It's my favourite Country! I know many things about if you need!Bye!

Car rental in Riga

by Bonobo2005

We got attracted by an advertisement of the company car4rent, which offered rentals @ EUR 28 per day for compactclass. But then we read the contact was unlogical that could somehow be verbally explained, but some clauses could have potentially been very disadvantegeous for us in case of an accident would happen. And they couldn't show the insurance policy that we paid for. Cheap but very unprofessionaland maybe not well insured! Instead we used Europcar , we got EUR 50 per day for 3 days VW Polo coming with 100% all risk insurance. Note that the starting price was higher, but some negotiation could be done. Excellent car/service. And they have an outlet at the airport which saved us a taxi ride.

By trams in Riga

by hopang

Travelling by trams in the city of Riga is a convenient means of transportation especially within the city limits. The trams in Riga are operated by Rigas Satiksme. There are eleven tram lines according to their website below. Several lines (4 lines) depart from Centraltirgus (Riga Central Market). The tram system in Riga has a total length of approximately 150 kilometers. The history of trams in Riga dates back to the late 19th century when horse-driven trams were used. The trams in the city of Riga are of type Tatra T3 and Tatra T3M boogie trams which run in pairs. A one day ticket costs 1.50 LVL per adult. However a one journey ticket within the city limit costs just 0.40 LVL per adult. Travelling in trams in Riga is an ideal and cheap way to see more of Riga if you have time to spare! We have certainly enjoyed the ride!

Cheap air tickets online

by davidjv

I think it is the fastest ticket web site in Latvia. Good prices and low transaction fees. It is a shame that they do not have the low-cost carriers like ryanair and easyjet integrated, but it is often cheaper to look for comparision proices with many segments and stopovers rather than fly direct, like with airbaltic.

Riga transportation

by zaffaran

To travel around Riga I'd recommend to use public transport system - it's reliable and operating quite often. Buses are rather new and have the name of the next stop on the display - which is great! Trolleybuses tend to be very old. But if you want to drive across Riga by your own car you MUST know one thing - in the city you will not find signposts with the name of the city outside Riga, you must know the number of the road , they are usually shown red.

baltic countries are making new roads thnx to european community money, so many roads are working in progress and it's quite dangerous to travel by car or bus...i saw many cars and tracks upside down long the way from Parnu to Riga...

Latvia by car

by DanielF

We hired a car in Latvia, for the public transportation is not very developped and it was the easiest way to explore the countryside.I recommend to rely on the international chains, even if their rates are a bit higher. At least you have the garantee of getting a newer car and, most of all, paying with credit card. The state of the roads in Latvia varies a lot. There are few motorways, but the traffic is almost inexistent in the most remote areas. In rural areas you can also find some unpaved roads.

Driving around by car

by Leipzig

Major roads in Latvia are under very good conditions! Speedlimit on Motorways / Highways is 110 km/h, according to a travel guide but I haven't found such a road in Latvia. Usually you are allowed to drive on open roads at 90 km/h. In towns you are allowed to drive 60 km/h. On cars light must be turned on day and night and alcohol limit is 0.0 per mille!

Road-Signs and Maps

by histamin32

If you want to explore Latvia outside of the major towns, this is best done by car. However, orientation is not easy, in particular when using small gravel roads. Road-signs are not always there. Therefore a good map is absolutely essential. The Latvijas autocelu atlants is simply superb. It can be bought at the Jana Seta shop, Elizabetes iela 83/85 in Riga. We actually bought it already by mail order before the trip.
