The castle was built in 1301 as a fortress for the Knights of the Livonian Order. It was built to defend Livonia's southern border with Lithuania. The Swedes destroyed it in 1625, and the Soviets rebuilt it, using it for various farm-related purposes. After Latvia's independence, it became a hotel. It also houses a library, a small history museum, and a restaurant with a medieval theme.
