Ventspils Radio Astronomy centre in Irbene
The Baltic Sea cost at Soviet times was quite much militarized, as it was good strategic point for USSR. The same happened in or around main ports of Baltic state countries (Liepaja, Ventspils, Klaipeda, so on).
A few kilometers from Ventspils there is a big satellite located, in older times the place was forbidden for locals; nowadays it is acceptable for all. Be careful to walk around, as you still could feel the traces of military basis (lot of metal fence remains, split in dunes, quite sharp ones, that could hurt your leg even if you with shoes).
Satellite is biggest in Northern Europe and 8th biggest in World.
Irbene is about 35 kilometers from Ventspils.
Kuldiga - Latvian "Venice"
Kuldiga is a place, mentioned first in 1242 as a stone castle place. In 1368 it got rights to be named as hanseatic town, for some time (1596 – 1616) it was a capital of Duchy of Courland. Later the importance of town decreased, castle was destroyed in 1702 by Sweedish troops.
Nowadays it is still medieval feeling town with buildings from 17th century left, widest waterfall of Venta river and nic 19th century brick bridge.
Nowadays Kuldiga is a small Latvian town, with population of 13500.
Kuldiga is about 58 kilometers from Ventspils.

Slitere National park
Slitere national park is a territory a bit North to Vientspils, ending at Kolka horn, place where Baltic Sea and Riga bay connects each other. Territory is preserved due to various species of plants and animals, but the main thing is old almost untouched dunes, named as “blue dunes”.
Slitere National park territory starts about 50 kilometers from Ventspils, road to North, along the Baltic Sea.
Soviet time object - radio-locator
This is one of grandiose military objects' which left Russian army, and which was located in the past army town. The feelings are quite strange when you go to the radio-locator, because in that town nobody lives today and many-storey buildings give spooky town impression.
This forth largest radio-locator in Europe once was used for interception of radio communications. You can make a reservation, if you'll call in advance.

You must go via road P 124 from Ventspils direction to Kolka and look for the small road on the right side. It's located in Irbene.
