It is situated in a building that originally was a hotel, called “Royal” and it was built during the period of historicism and art nouveau. The building was reconstructed in 1998 and has been awarded the prize of the Union of Architects of Latvia as the bet reconstruction of the year.

The Town-hall Square is enclosed by historical buildings – the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St.Nicolas and the building at 13 Annas Street, dating to the 18th century, which since 1850 was used as a town-hall. Town hall square is one of the most popular places for walks in Ventpils. Every year different tradition activities are organised in the Town hall square during the Sea Festival, at Christmas and other holidays.

Till the middle of the 20th century a chain of port warehouses was situated in this area. Today several remarkable tourist attractions are located there – Livonian order castle, excursion boat “Hercogs Jekabs”, and the monument to K.Valdemars (famous Latvian writer). Ostas street promenade is a popular place for taking a walk. From here, the industrial activities of the Ventspils Port can be oberved.

The Church is in the Hall Square. It built in times when Latvia was a part of Russian imperia. Classicism style and bright colour make this building very special.

There are no many modernism style buildings in Ventspils, but I found one in the old part of the town. It needs a restoration.

    by Airpunk
At tiny town hall square, the largest building is St. Nicholas church which was erected in 1835 in classisistic style. To confuse all tourists, there’s also a russian-orthodox church with the same name, around 200 meters away. To confuse you further, “Lonely Planet” was also a little confused and switched the designation numbers 9 and 10 of these churches. At least that was so in the 4th edition, the one which I used in Ventspils…
