Retreat from Democracy...

by sourbugger

Any country that moves away from Democracy in the 21st century normally has the wrath of the world community following it.Liechenstein is an interesting exception to this rule. Whilst it used to score very highly (and still does) in terms of human rights and quality of life for its citizens, it has effectively ceased to be a democracy. In March 2003 the voters of Liechtenstein approved a referendum was giving Prince Hans-Adam the right to dismiss governments, dismiss individual ministers, make judicial apointments and veto laws. This seems to 'jar' a bit when you consider the freedom movements struggling to have their voice heard in many more repressive parts of the world.

Funkensonntag - "burn the winter"

by loisl

The identity of Liechtenstein includes the customs and traditions that unfold over the course of the year in ecclesiastic and everyday life. One of the most important traditions, which is also likely rooted in the pre-Christian era, is Funken or Küachle Sunday: On the first Sunday of Lent, winter is banished by burning it in effigy.Mid/End of February

About Tips & Tipping

by Krystynn

And now... the all-important subject of TIPPING.Tipping is rarely necessary as hotels, restaurants and bars are required by law to include a 15% service charge. I can almost hear you heave a sigh of relief! :-) Even cabs have a service charge included. So, forget about exercising your bargaining skills in this tiny principality unless you're scavenger hunting at someone's garage sale. Such things are simply not done here.

ATM Machines & Withdrawing Cash

by Krystynn

You've runned out of money for shopping?Worry not! So long as you bring along your ATM card and.... an open mind. Remember, if your ATM card is linked to international networks like 'Cirrus', 'Plus', 'The Exchange' and 'Maestro', you can withdraw money from any ATM machines in the world. What's more, you'd even benefit from the low interbank exchange rates given to you vis-a-vis if you were to change it at your local money-changer. I have survived on this method for ALL my trips abroad and so far, no ATM machines have failed me. Yes, even in the remotest villages in Africa. :-)) If you haven't tried this method, I challenge you to do so today. And be pleasantly surprised at how much you can save at the end of the day using this method. I kid you not!

No passport checks

by keeweechic

There are No passport checks when you enter Liechtenstein from Switzerland and therefore no stamp in the passport however, if you really want one, for a fee, you can get it stamped at the passport office. Passport/Entry Regulations are the same as for Switzerland.

Climate

by keeweechic

Liechtenstein has a fairly mild climate with an average temperature ranging from -1°C (30° F)in January to 21°C (70°F) in July. The reason for the mild climate despite Liechtenstein's alpine location is a warming wind from the south..

Liechtensteiners are a...

by James63

Liechtensteiners are a friendly people, and seem pretty open to Americans. That said, coming from a small and conservative country, they tend to be quiet, and the nightlife tends more to the quiet bar scene, except during the summer concert series. Also, be advised that the Walser dialect is spoken in the high country of the principality - although German is understood everywhere and English is widely spoken.
