Hiking in the Alps

Liechtenstein is a very fanatic sports-country. The government strongly supports sports and the country has an enormous amount of sporters and sport-clubs per capita.One of the most popular sports in the country is hiking. Hiking in the Alps is a fantastic way to get your physical training and to get a great view of the environment. Liechtenstein has over 400 kilometers of hiking paths all over the mountains. Most of them are well prepared and they are all clearly marked on several maps at the roadsides and on the tourist-map for hikers that is available at the tourist office.There are several huts so spend the night in in the Liechtensteiner Alps, although these are only opened in the summertime. After failing to score a single goal in the 2002 World Cup campaign, tiny Liechtenstein surprised even themselves when they took on the might of Europe - well, okay, Luxembourg - and thrashed them 4-0 in a qualifying match for the 2006 competition. If they keep on improving at this rate, they should be a shoo-in for the finals in, say, 2066.....

Lonely Planet don't do Liechtenstein - at least not in a separate volume. So if you want to know something about the country, you could do worse than buy Charlie Connelly's 'Stamping Grounds', an account of the Principality's quest for World Cup qualification in 2002. The football is not much to write home about, and so the irrepressible Charlie fills in between the boring bits and the goals hitting the back of the Liechtenstein net with a humorous overview of the tiny Alpine nation. Worth reading for his death-defying Alpine exploits.

Divert from route 1

The Swiss national system of signposted cycle routes cover the country in nine exetremely well though-out routes.A couple of years ago we followed much of the route from Andermatt to Geneva, which I would throughly recommend. It follows quite closely the route of the Rhone river.It is only a short diversion form the route to visit Liechenstein, and the youth hostel (see other tip) makes for a good stopover.The approach is quite hilly up from the Rhone, but well worth the push.

Liechtenstein has it's own Skiing resort.It is, compared to other places fairly small, and specially recommended for beginners and kids.In Summertime it's great for hiking up here. Skiing gear,and please wear a helmet!

Any Soccer Fans From FC Vaduz?

If you're a soccer fan of FC Vaduz or Liechtenstein National Team, you may like to drop in to cheer the teams play their home games at Stadion Rheinpark, a 5,000 seater stadium with a small covered stand on each side of the pitch.There are no access to the open areas behind the goal posts. I was told that whenever the Liechtenstein National Team - consisting of amateur players - play in this stadium, approx. 3,500 of Liechtenstein soccer fans will be cheering them on.

Vaduz FC plays their home games in the nice Rheinpark Stadium. Don't expect much emotions, the Liechtensteinian people are, liek the Seiss, very calm people. Also the soccer they play is not on the top of course, remember it's second league of Switzerland! But if you are near Liechtenstein why not take a trip to Vaduz and watch a game? Specially if the national team is playing, if you got luck you can see them playing against one of the big nations in europe.But attention, you have to watch out for some things. Firest, Senape is not allowed in the stadium. This has changed, but last time it was not allowed. Why? Because there were some bad guys who made some fun with threwing arround senape and they didn't want to clean it all up. Everything has to be clean! Oh yes!Second thing is: don't hang up transparents with bad words about their Leader, the Fürst. You will get in trouble with the...
